MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:
Track:
(52)

David Mead released his first CD in 1999, which I bought based on a rave review in the newspaper (a practice I try to avoid, now that sound samples are around). He has one of the most striking voices that I've heard in pop music, besides being an excellent songwriter, decent guitarist and..these days, also a record reviewer for PASTE magazine (check out Paste #34 for his savaging of the latest Poison CD. Fan of Poison? You can stop here. You won't like David..)

Allmusic.com correctly states about his first LP: "a collection of well-crafted tunes that tap classic writers from George Gershwin and Cole Porter to Lennon and McCartney and Paul Simon for inspiration without ever coming across as contrived or less than fresh."

Since then, he's produced 3 more full-length CDs and one EP. I saw David at The Tin Angel here in Philly a couple of years ago and loved his performance.

His second CD, "Mine And Yours" was produced by Adam Schlesinger, the brains behind Fountains Of Wayne, who emphasized the power pop influences in David's music (in my mind, never a bad thing), but this is a gentle reflective number, my favorite from his debut. I love the fact that his voice cracks when he goes for a low note, but they left it in.

And here's a video of him performing "Human Nature", a Michael Jackson song he covered and did a GREAT job on (I'm always surprised when someone can make something out of one of his songs...sorry)

Once again Mark, you feature an unknown (to me) artist of no small talent. Your continuing contributions to my musical education are always welcome and usually surprising.

Yes, this is impressive. I like how he has to work to hit some of those unusual vocal notes, very endearing. Thanks!

Quite pleasant listen - not familiar with David Mead, but may very well have to acquaint myself. Enjoyed the cover version, and did not like the original or MJ so that's saying something. Thanks for the lovely intro!

DMDM: Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. Also enjoyed the brief vacation from busting each other's stones... :)

Scotfree: He doesn't have any trouble with the high ones, though, eh? What a gorgeous falsetto. In a later songs one of his lyrics refers to a guy at a bar who told him he "sings like a girl".

Girlcrawl: You're welcome. I expected to be savaged by now for introducing a series called "Romantic Music" but am pleasantly surprised (other than the fact that someone assumed I loved The Carpenters - I do love her voice, but not most of their songs....)

Very nice. Reminds me a bit of Glen Hansard. Have you seen the movie "Once"? Highly Recommended. I'll add a post on my page about it.

Oceanrain - yes, the same David Mead. This is off of his second CD, "Mine And Yours". Glad he's getting airplay...somewhere!

Miles - could be. Or he may be looking for a phone booth to change out of his secret identity.

Fabulous to have another Mead fan on board. Since most comments on a post happen within 24 hours, it's a nice surprise to get one months later. I would guess that's because you put David's name into the search engine.
