MOG MOG

WHERE E=MC HAMMER

(26)

Another unheard (by me) gem that has popped up on the Proper box set of Hank Williams - Hillbilly Hero. My conversion to a Hank fanatic convinced me to spring for a 5-CD Jimmie Rodgers box set. Another yodeler, but from an earlier period (1927-1933). When I get to that, expect some tracks to show up here. Where else?

After scouring YouTube, it appears there are less than a handful of live Hank performance videos. Here they are:

From his second performand on The Kate Smith Evening Hour. It's 9 minutes long, shows the old NBC logo, Kate and her show title, then two hokey numbers by Roy Acuff before Hank kicks in around the halfway mark, around 4:00. Fast forward to that if you like, but the earlier footage is also fascinating. Hank does "Cold Cold Heart", then an abbreviated version of "I Can't Help It", duetting with Anita Carter.

Here's a truncated video of Hank doing "Hey Good Lookin'", unfortunately briefly interrupted by his worthless son, Hank Jr.

Finally, again from Kate Smith, a live version of Hank's original gospel tune I Saw The Light done ensemble style (which really does suit the song), with Hank having a one-verse solo vocal partway in:

Unfortunately, that appears to be it.

Maybe Hank had been inspired by the Beatles' song "You're Gonna Lose That Girl" on this one. I love how his voice sometime slips into falsetto for a nanosecond as he swerves between one note and the next. He had such a genius for melody, lyrics, singing and arranging, a model of brilliant simplicity and, at other levels, brilliant complexity.

If Hank has that time machine for Beatles inspiration, let him set it for 2008 and give us all a break!.

It's high-test, high-octane, and should get you down many country roads.

i love this man. although there is no way to replace him, his grandson is capable of being his spittin image. Have you seen/heard Hank Williams III when he covers Hank Williams songs? (the boy also did a stint in a metal band, but that's not what i mean here) Hank III sounds exactly like grandad. it can bring tears to your eyes it's so haunting! he used to look a lot like grandad too, but now he's covered in tattoos and occasionally sports crazy long hair...

Gems. And somehow when country folks sing gospel, I believe they actually mean it.

Yes, and it can be very charming, especially when done in the bluegrass genre. Not being a religious man, there is an ever-pliant line between charming and overbearing when it comes to religious music for me. Frankly, the choral version of I Saw The Light is on the good side of that line, while Hank's solo recording falls on the other. Funny, eh?
