Slaid Cleaves in concert - a great writer-singer-songwriter

Posted over 2 years ago
I saw Slaid Cleaves last night at The World Cafe Live in Philadelphia and was not disappointed. Why the tag "WRITER-singer-songwriter"? It seems to fit the kind of songwriting he excels at - slice-of-life songs about the locals in the bars he used to play, songs about everyday people and not ME ME ME. Story songs, not love songs, though there is love aplenty within. He's somewhere between folk and country (Americana, perhaps?) with a smoky drawl - fantastic, expressive voice. In concert, he played with another guitarist - not totally necessary but appreciated - as Slaid is more of a strummer than a picker. He sounded great, told interesting stories (just like his songs) and, surprising me a bit, introduced many as about real people and events, not fictional characters. I bought the two CDs of his that I don't own from his wife at the merchandise table. I love doing that, as I figure it puts the most cash in the artist's hands. Not many good videos on YouTube, so you will have to live with an audio track, one of my favorites of his entitled "Key Chain".

  1. Girlcrawl says Wasn't sure what to expect, but really enjoyed listening to this tune. Very well-crafted song, and 'fantastically expressive' voice - love the guitar work as well. Had not heard of Slaid Cleaves so this is a treat! Where would you recommend that I start with his music (a favourite cd perhaps)? Thanks much for posting; nice link B42 - excellent!

  5. MrExcite says This is my first MOG comment, nice find. I've seen Slaid at Sellersville w/Mary Gauthier and the Sunoco theatre in Harrisburg w/Guy Clark and he impresses everytime. I discovered him on Folk Alleys while listening to their stream, and thought, damn, this guy is the new John Prine. Give all his CD's a try, they show evolution in writing, and some of the best songs only hit you after 3 or 4 listens. Killed me to miss the World Cafe gig, I'm in Lancaster and it would have been a short hop to see him. Thanks. MrExcite

  6. dermahrk says I'm honored to be your first post. Did you miss him because you had a commitment or were you unaware? I can try to keep you informed the next time he comes to Philly if you like. Yup, I bought all available CDs that I didn't already have at the concert. Now seeking the totally out-of-print early ones.
