Cover: Jonatha Brooke doing "Eye In The Sky" (Alan Parsons Project)

Posted over 2 years ago
This is the song, heard on WXPN in Philadelphia, that got me into Jonatha Brooke (not literally, unfortunately). It's a gorgeous cover of "Eye In The Sky", with a much more intimate feel, that blows the original out of the water. If you've never heard Jonatha, and are familiar with the original, hit PLAY now.

  2. dachmo says She played a series of shows, a couple of years back, at a theater I was working for at the time here in NYC. I didn't know who she was back then and probably never would have heard her if I didn't work those shows. All of which were sold out. A great artist.

  5. dermahrk says Miles! I was beginning to think that you died or sumpin'. Great to have you back. Yes, I enjoy Plumb as well. Once I fixate on an artist, I tend to collect everything they've put out and now own all of Jonatha's material, as well as what she released as half of a duo called The Story. Saw her live for the first time a few weeks ago and she is even better live than she is on record.

  7. Spike says Missed you MT, welcome back. Mog vs. precious time is always a dilemma. To improve on the Alan Parson Project is quite a feat. Another new (to me) artist to find time for.

  9. mousetrap says It's interesting - I was a big Alan Parsons Project fan during their heyday (to the extent that one could say they had a heyday...). I'm happy to say that I own the original deluxe vinyl release of their 1975 debut album _Tales Of Mystery And Imagination_ - a concept album of Edgar Allan Poe stories set to music. Big ol' interior booklet, onion-skin overleaf and all of that ostentatious silliness. Lots of choice stuff on that record - the vocoder-laced "The Raven," the eerily beautiful "Cask Of Amontillado," the foreboding and dissonant "Fall Of The House Of Usher." Anyway, I also *really* liked _I Robot_ and enjoyed most of _Pyramania_....but after those I developed the strong impression that Alan and friends had run out of gas. By the time _Eye In The Sky_ appeared in 1982, I was almost completely disenchanted - can't remember if I even bought it. So a few years ago I was in a restaurant with an old friend of mine who had also been a fan of the Project back then, and what should start playing over the sound system but the original version of "Eye In The Sky." I interrupted our conversation and pointed to the speakers in the ceiling, saying, "Listen to that. That is such a crappy song. _I am the eye in the sky, looking at you?_ What's he even talking about?! _I am the maker of rules?_ Puh-_leeze!!!_" I just got on kind of a tear, ripping on poor Alan's later work, and my friend got a chuckle out of it. No more than a few weeks later, Jonatha's _Back In The Circus_ came out. I was already a big Jonatha fan, having seen her in concert twice and acquired her entire catalog. So I was really excited about the new album and dove right into it. While her cover of "Fire And Rain" is a definite standout, she closes the album with an even more jaw-dropping cover: the version of "Eye In The Sky" that dermahrk has posted here. When I heard Jonatha's take on this song, I was blown away - it's like she imbues it with a level of meaning and an emotional weight that Alan himself never even knew was there. To have this performance come so closely on the heels of my indelicate trashing of the original song was a real whack on the side of the head for me. All of the above might well be condensed to the following: Cool post, dermahrk. You're right - it's a killer cover.
