Blossom Dearie - an introduction

Posted over 2 years ago
This is just too much of a coincidence. This past week I've been playing a mix sent to me by fellow mogger Ivylander and, although I'm not much of a jazz fan, one track caught my attention - by an obscure (at least, to me) jazz vocalist named Blossom Dearie - from the 1950s-60s.A couple of nights ago I was reading the latest MOJO and was surprised to find a one-page article about her written by the female member of the duo Everything But The Girl. So now I'm intrigued, and thought I would share that introduction with you. Here's the article and the track.By the way, that same issue of MOJO has Iggy Pop on the cover. This is why it is my favorite music magazine published today. The breadth of their coverage is great.

  2. Augusts1 says Very interesting, I like the song & the article is fascinating. I love that old cocktail jazz. I have several cds of it one by Quincy Jones Orchestra(which has the song that would later be featured in the beginning of the 3rd Austin Powers movie) & the other is Esquivel, which is some really cheesy space cocktail music but it's great!

  4. deadmandeadman says Blossom Dearie. Nice dermarhk, will you be diggin' around for more? BTW, MOJO? Yeah I guess its a cut above the usual slick bundles of ads that pass themselves off as music magazines.

  5. ivylander says Glad you're digging her. The stars do appear to be aligned for our beloved Blossom lately. Maybe a new groundswell of appreciation for her impeccable phrasing, understated playing and wit is imminent. Credit where credit's due, though - the always-out-in-front Fistula Spume tipped me to her. And isn't what MOG is all about, friends? Viral word of mouth.

  7. mktackabery says Blossom is back? Cool . . . yeah she was kind of a rare find even when she was around, but she had her contingent of fans, that's for sure. i remember when Verve started re-issuing her stuff and the store where I worked saw some of those guys come out of the woodwork.

  8. Cody B says I first heard her as a kid on "Figure 8" from Multiplication Rock. Very Unique and fragile voice. Thanks for this

  10. Spike says The song and the way she sings it are marvelous. The article is also. I like especially what Tracy Thorne said about accompanists who are spare vs. accompanists who are too busy, and how Blosson Dearie sings so we focus on the song and its lyrics rather than on her voice.
