Ricky Skaggs in concert - spectacular bluegrass

Posted over 2 years ago
I saw Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder Thursday night at the Sellersville Theatre in Sellersville, PA. What a spectacular group of bluegrass musicians!Bluegrass as a genre attracts some really excellent players, as much of the music is played at lightning-fast speed and clarity. A punk rocker with 5 chords and a fuzz box would hang his head in shame. Out of this pool of great players, Ricky has cherry-picked some of the very best - his backing group, Kentucky Thunder, has won multiple Grammys for their work. I spent the entire 90 minutes smiling and keeping rhythm with my feet. Ricky talked about the many ongoing projects he has going on - it sounds like he will be releasing 3 CDs in 2007 - one done with the Whites, another bluegrass band that frequently tours with him, another celebrating the 60 year anniversary of bluegrass by covering some of the earliest classics, as well as a new one from the on-stage group.I was surprised to discover that one member of Kentucky Thunder is Dave Vincent, who is the brother to Rhonda Vincent, another of my favorite contemporary bluegrass performers.Anyone out there have any other bluegrass artists they would recommend?

  1. Cody B says Del McCoury is my favorite right now and the only artist I make a point of buying at release. I like the fact he makes it out to Brooklyn every year. I saw Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver on Garrison Keillor's New Years Show, and I liked what he was doin' too. I've been to the Greyfox festival and I hope to go this year again. I get a lot of mix tapes from a buddy in Maine who's a dobro player, and with all that..I'm a Del guy
