Shawn Colvin in concert

Posted about 5 years ago
I saw Shawn Colvin in concert for the first time a couple of weeks ago when she played the Keswick Theater in Glenside, PA. She had a small band with her, which luckily included Buddy Miller, a fantastic guitarist and vocalist who has released many Americana / Country albums solo and with his wife Julie Miller. Shawn recently released her first album in many years, These Four Walls. The CD is excellent and every track is on my iPod (I quickly delete songs not to my taste). The concert was great, the musicianship superb, but a few things surprised me.1) Shawn's voice was not as powerful as it comes across on record. She tends to start and end each lyric with a softer voice which is sometimes hard to hear. The few songs that Buddy sang were very different because he has a really powerful, projecting voice.2) Shawn's appearance was not as I expected from her CDs. While she's no spring chicken she looks elegant, beautiful and tastefully dressed. She came on stage in some kind of short leather coat wearing a flat cap and kept this outfit on for the entire concert.3) She seems somewhat fragile as a person. She referred to the disappointing sales on "A Whole New You" (which followed "A Few Small Repairs" containing the hit "Johnny Came Home"), her endless therapy sessions. After songs like "Climb On A Back That's Strong" (paraphrasing) I expected a more confident persona.Still, I love her music and would gladly see her again. Has anyone else seen her in concert and what was your response?

  1. dermahrk says Addendum: I meant to say she looks elegant on the CDs, kind of frumpy in person. Poorly phrased.

  2. deadmandeadman says I saw her in concert a few yrs back, she didn't exude confidence then, either. But her voice was in fine form. She seem a bit ......diffident? in her stage presence, and she didn't seem like she was comfortable with her band. Her solo acoustic set was much more satisfyin'

  3. dermahrk says She was comfortable with THIS band - only Buddy Miller and a female percussionist whose name I didn't catch. They sounded great. Love the fact you used the word diffident. NOW who's the english teacher?

  5. slrevare says I have seen Shawn Colvin two or three times, all solo accoustic. Once was at Austin City Limits Music Festival in '03, once at House of BLues in New Orleans about 7 years ago. I find her accoustic stuff pretty good, but I like the full band stuff. Sounds like this should have been a good one. Perhaps she's one of those artists who's just better recorded.
