It's kind of a shock to be listening to music from 1928 and not recognize the solo instrument. About 1:10 in, the solo is taken by....what? I know from cartoons they used to play a saw as a musical instrument. That's my best guess....

I'm not sure. Its an awesome sound though, isn't it? We'll have to wait 'till Spike wakes up n logs on.
I not at all sure what that is, I've heard a couple saw players in the past and it doesn't sound like that to me unless it's a different technique than I've heard. Sound sort of like one of those water whistle bird call things I remember from childhood? Or aliens :)
This is a stumper....
However, while I'm here may I say what a fine track this is, and how very well remastered it appears to have been.
I think that's one of those slide whistles.....i could be mistaken but that's the first thing that popped into my head....
Most old timers know this one. That is someone with the talent to whistle. Lots of folks can whistle like that back then and still do. See http://www.basichip.com/#whistle for some examples
also you can download some of these at

I am going with the slide whistle as well, used a lot with country music at the time as well as with cartoons
Although the track credits are a little contradictory, "Bob MacGimsey - Whistler" appears. I suppose that could mean slide whistle, but I suspect that DJ RPM is correct. That is a human mouth.
its a lot of years since I heard a yodelling track
Think I would go with the 'whistle' theory along with a washboard ?
great ol track
cheers derm x
My vote is for human whistle. The track wins my vote too. After all these years I suddenly remembered making crude attempts to whistle like that, sort of a whistle-yodel.
