Another cover: Buddy Miller re-does Gene Pitney

Posted about 4 years ago
This is quite possibly my favorite song done by Buddy Miller and, for me, that's really saying something. Gene Pitney released this song in 1964 and even in a year dominated by a Beatles-obsessed America, it got to #9 on the singles charts (I have *got* to pick up a Gene Pitney compilation one of these days..)Written by Brill Building songwriters supreme Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Gene Pitney

  1. ivylander says I too think Buddy's is the superior version, even though I fell hard for Pitney's take when it first came out. Recently I discovered a "new" version of thos song in the excellent compilation "Hard Workin' Man: The Jack Nitzsche Story Vol. 2." Nitzsche was one of the great Sixties record arrangers and producers, in the Spectorian sense of the word. Turns out Pitney's version of this song came out a year after the actual original, recorded by.....Frankie Laine? Nitzsche arranged Laine's single, which was produced by Terry Melcher. Thought the actual original might interest you. Very Spectorish, not quite as theatrically over-the-top as Pitney.... ~G0cabhkOJu3.mp3~

  2. dermahrk says Thanks a lot, IL. I always love hearing original versions, though Frankie approaches Gene's histrionics there a bit at the end. A quick check on AllMusic.com shows this has been recorded by a few people, the recognizable names being: Cyndi Lauper Montrose Juice Newton Bill Medley Tim Rose Del Shannon

  3. ivylander says Seeing Cyndi Lauper's name juxtaposed with that song is kinda like being forced to imagine sex between Regis and Kelly....

  4. Spike says Hearing Buddy Miller and Frankie Lane having musical intercourse with the same Mann/Weill song is surrealistic enough. Yowzers!

  6. BrandNewFriend says Have been away for a few days with friends and seem to have missed so much on MOG Like Ivy I fell for the Pitney version, and really consider this as an all time 'classic' "I can see, you're slipping away from me" I never knew the 'Sunday Covers' was started by Deadman and totally agree that he should get 'Mogger of the Week' I love it ! Its good to be back. Great post as always derm thanks x

  7. Bartleby says The Buddy Miller is stark and touching. It does it for me. I'll also second BrandNewFriend: DMDM should get the Mogger-of-the-Week badge.
