The Rembrandts, new masters - Danny Wilde solo '88-'89

Posted about 1 year ago
(Sixth in a series)The new Rembrandts website (therembrandts.net)has been a godsend to me. It includes a link to a free download of a Westwood One radio show from 1988 featuring Rembrandt-to-be Danny Wilde, live, in 1988. The attached track is from that concert and has never been studio-recorded and released on his solo LPs. But - on to the chronological. 1988 saw him signed to Geffen Records for a 2-album deal. Thus came the release of his second solo LP, entitled ??Any Man's Hunger??Even with the lack of future Rembrandt Phil Solem, this is IMHO the best of his late 80s LPs. The public apparently agreed, in small numbers, as it charted at #176 on the Billboard 200 - the only one of his solo LPs to land there. This may've been due to the modest success of his single, ??Time Runs Wild??A video was made for this single, presented here:As well as a truncated live version of him and his band performing it live:Does anyone recognize the TV show and/or host? I do not. I guess at the time the flowing-curly-Michael-Bolton-like mane was in, and Danny complied. The song reached #15 on the ??Billboard Mainstream Rock?? chart (how many charts do dey gots, anywaze?)A year later ('89) his final 80s solo LP came out. Oddly enough, this one was self-titled (or ??eponymous?? as the reviewers love to say) - a tradition usually reserved for first releases. It seemed a bit calculated - from the pop-star cover to the songs within. One single was released, ??The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of??But it did nothing for Danny or Geffen. I'll include what I think is a better track, and my fave from the LP, ??Who's Gonna Hold You Now??, in Comments. NEXT: Finally, The Rembrandts burst into the 90s with a powerful debut album.

  3. dermahrk says Well, yeah. Probably why the first never made an LP. I still like it, though.

  4. Bartleby says "I guess at the time the flowing-curly-Michael-Bolton-like mane was in" -- Maybe true but I like Mr Wilde's sound better than Mr Bolton's.

  5. waydutch says I believe the clip is from “The Late Show”. The first show produced by the newly-formed Fox Broadcasting Company, originally featuring Joan Rivers in her own late-night talk show. After her departure, the program was hosted by various rotating guests, after which the host spot was taken over by Ross Shafer. I believe this is Ross introducing Danny. Ross Shafer from Wiki - "Shafer graduated from Federal Way High School in Federal Way, Washington in 1971. As a high school All Conference football player, he received a scholarship to play linebacker for the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, where he earned a Business Marketing degree in 1975. Shafer began his career as a small town pet store manager-turned-stand-up comic in Seattle, Washington, after winning the Showtime cable network's 1983 Showtime Comedy Laugh-Off. The following year he became the host and a writer-performer of the late-night comedy series he created called Almost Live! on TV station KING / Channel 5. After four 1/2 years and nearly 40 Emmy Awards later, Shafer left to host the Fox Network's The Late Show. Shafer's first national TV show was the USA Network's Love Me, Love Me Not, taped in Vancouver, British Columbia. The show ran for 130 episodes and aired in Italy under the name Mama No Mama In 1985, Shafer spearheaded an effort to have "Louie, Louie" replace "Washington, My Home" by Helen Davis as Washington's official state song. [1] Picking up on this initially prankish effort, Whatcom County Councilman Craig Cole introduced Resolution No. 85-12 in the state legislature, citing the need for a "contemporary theme song that can be used to engender a sense of pride and community, and in the enhancement of tourism and economic development". His resolution also called for the creation of a new "Louie Louie County". While the House did not pass it, the Senate's Resolution 1985-37 declared April 12, 1985, "Louie Louie Day". A crowd of 4,000, estimated by press reports, convened on the state capitol that day for speeches, singalongs, and performances by the Wailers, the Kingsmen, and Paul Revere and the Raiders. Three days later, a Seattle event commemorated the occasion with the premiere performance of a new, Washington-centric version of the song written by composer Berry.[2] [3] In 1988, Shafer succeeded Joan Rivers as host of the Fox Network talk show The Late Show. The stint lasted one year, after which Shafer co-hosted the ABC network magazine show Days End with rotating hosts Spencer Christian, Matt Lauer, and Hannah Storm. Shafer also served as host of Match Game 90 on ABC. In 1994, Ross began writing and producing a series of, through mid-2006, 14 human resource training films, distributed worldwide in nine languages. He also wrote and produced the comedy album Inside the First Family, about the trevails and rumors surrounding the Clinton Administration. As a seminar leader and motivator, he coined the phrase "customer empathy", created the Customer Empathy Institute at Calif. State University Monterey Bay and speaks at 100+ corporate events each year, and has written books including Nobody Moved Your Cheese: How to Ignore the Experts and Trust Your Gut, The Customer Shouts Back!, and Customer Empathy. Separately, he wrote the comedy cookbook-for-men, Cook Like A Stud. . Shafer is married to country singer Leah Shafer, with whom he has a daughter, Lauren Rae. He has two sons, Adam and Ryan, with his first wife." . which is probably more than you ever wanted to know but you got me digging to figure it out and them's my results. . Been enjoying this series - Thanks

  8. runobodyii says "Who's Gonna Hold You Know" is my favorite hands down. Excepting the hooky chorus which I also dig, the song has a Southern rock-y feel, a lot bit country, a little bit rock 'n' roll, totally cool.
