The Rembrandts, new masters - Danny Wilde goes solo (kind of)

    Isn't It Enough
(Fifth in a series)After Great Buildings broke up, Danny Wilde spent the latter half of the 1980s looking for success as a solo artist. The first solo LP, entitled ??The Boyfriend??, was released in 1986.His fellow Rembrandt-to-be, guitarist extraordinaire/singer/songwriter Phil Solem, came along (from *Great Buildings*) for the ride on that first LP, providing lead guitar and background vocals. He can even be seen, albeit briefly (look FAST for the semi-mulleted lead guitarist), in the video for one of the singles off the album, ??Isn’t It Enough??. Being the 1980s videos HAD to be made, and they hit a lot of the clichés with this one. Still, I love the song. The album failed to make the U.S. charts, but the two singles from it were what are termed “radio hits”. This means, I guess, that they garnered airplay without troubling the charts. *Patty Smyth* (once of *Scandal*) must’ve been listening, for she covered ??Isn’t It Enough?? on her first solo LP, ??Never Enough??. I’ll include her version in Comments. SIDENOTE: How hip are ye? A quick ??pop?? quiz. Do ye prefer *Patty Smyth*, cute-as-a-button diminutive rock vocalistor *Patti Smith*, the rock poetess? On a good day, she looks like Keith Richards. On a bad one, a goblin. The hip answer is, of course, goblin-girl. I own *all* the CD output of Patty Smyth (now Mrs. John McEnroe) and none by the poetess. Hipster certification, ??sayonara??! The first time I saw the Rembrandts in Philadelphia, at the Theater of the Living Arts (TLA) on Philly’s South Street – back in the good old days when they had actual seats instead of standing on a concrete floor, they did ??Isn’t It Enough??. I knew I recognized it, but could not remember from where. Years later, when I found a copy of the out-of-print CD from Patty, I realized it must’ve been her version that I heard on AOR radio. One more video from Danny’s first LP exists – for the other single, ??Body To Body??. The videos seem to have outlasted the LP, which has never been released on CD and is out-of-print. I burned a copy off of my vinyl, but last weekend found that, through the new Rembrandts website (The Rembrandts.net) you could download, for free, mp3s of the original album in better sound quality. Alas and alack, after Danny’s first solo LP, Phil and he would not meet up on record for another 4 years, when they formed The Rembrandts. NEXT: Danny’s next two late-80s solo releases.

  1. Bartleby says Wow, Derm' how much research did you put into this one? -- You're more of a hipster than I'll ever be anyway.

  2. deadmandeadman says I own one Patti Smith cd. It was a gift. It was better than I'd expected, but not something I'll play each week. The Rembrandts et el, on the other hand....... Mark, You are getting good at this. You bring out the names every sorta knows and you get us to listen to some great music we (I at least) missed. Or you gonna do a series on your beloved Yoko?

  5. scotfree says Mark, this is a cool song and I'm sorry I haven't tuned in for your Rembrandts series. THey are a band I always thought I should give a shot, so I'll see if I can catch it up. Patti Smith? Her first, "Horses" is (IMHO) classic...."Radio Ethiopia" is cool - but I'm not sure she progressed much beyond that. Anyway, Todd Rundgren included some of her poetry on a giant band-aid that was included with "A Wizard, A True Star"... I can't find a picture. Patti Smythe, on the other hand, was a rock boy's fantasy dream girl (raspberries to you, Pat Benatar). Thanks for the history lesson amigo!!

  6. runobodyii says You can pretty much sing the verses to John Waits "Missing You" to the music of this song - - apropos of nothing. Still enjoying this series. Thanks.

  7. dermahrk says *Bartleby* - yes, it takes a bit of research, but most of this is in my head as a result of being fanatical for decades. *Deadmandeadman* - my series on my "beloved Yoko" - her greatest hits - would be mercifully short. As slim as her talents. *Scot* - I wish Patty Smyth would un-retire like Patti Smith did. Smyth did 2 LPs with Scandal (one an EP), two solo CDs and.....done. "Rock Boy's fantasy dreamgirl"? What's wrong wit dat? *Runobodyii*: (You really have to tell me where that screen name came from someday) - you are indeed correct about the similarity between the two songs. I checked AllMusic.com. "Missing You" came out 3 years after Danny's song, so now we know who copied whom, if indeed they did. Thanks, one and all. I really do not expect to get a lot of comments on my series - it's more of a workout of what's been in my head for so long - but any attention is greatly appreciated.

  8. runobodyii says I'm Nobody! Who are you? Are you--Nobody--Too? [r.u.nobody.ii] Then there's a pair of us? Don't tell! they'd advertise--you know! How dreary--to be--Somebody! How public--like a Frog-- To tell one's name--the livelong June-- To an admiring Bog! -- Emily Dickinson

  9. dermahrk says Not only witty but literary as well. Congrats! The mystery is solved (and would've been solved earlier had I not slept through my high school course featuring Emily).
