Belated Sunday cover: Dave Edmunds does Fats Domino

Posted about 1 year ago
From the latest (last?) release from Dave Edmunds, this fantastic cover of the Fats Domino hit "I'm Ready". Most of the album is filled with live versions of already-released semi-hits, but I bought up the new songs on iTunes. No one can cover the masters like Mr. Edmunds!

  1. Madeline Burke says You rocked my morning! Definitly have got to check out the rest of this CD!

  2. dermahrk says Just to clarify, I meant Edmunds OWN semi-hits. I wish he'd done a live album of nothing but *new* covers (or new songs) but, alas, not the case.

  3. mousetrap says Killer tune! Dave's voice is in a lower register than I'm used to hearing from him (20 years ago he would've done this tune a fourth or fifth higher, I'd wager), but his singing is still spot-on. Predictably, I LOVE Geraint Watkins' rockin' piano. It's clear the guy has listened to his share of Johhnie Johnson -- and Fats Domino, for that matter. Great pick, dermahrk!

  4. Jonh Ingham says Thanks to mousetrap for answering the question on my (and every discerning music fan's) mind - who is playing that rocking piano?? Fabulous rendition of a great song - thanks!

  6. ivylander says I didn't think I'd ever hear a Dave Edmunds song with a sax in it.....whatever, a nifty little rocker up to his lofty standards. Why do you wonder whether it's his last?

  7. waydutch says This is great. Thanks! I hadn't heard it yet. Interesting word play in the album title - A Pile of Rocks / Rockpile

  8. Mike the Knife says From personal experience, I can tell ya that Geraint Watkins is/was a badass on the keys - and a nice reg'lar guy in person. Interviewed and hung out with Edmunds a couple of times (once in New Orleans when he and his band played a wild gig on the Riverboat President as it chugged down the mighty Mississippi), and he was a straight shooter, too. Now, I think I need me a little "Queen of Hearts."

  9. dermahrk says Ivylander, Dave had a quadruple bypass a while back and seems to be in retirement. The last non-live CD he issued ??Hand-Picked Musical Fantasies?? was sold only from his website which, last time I checked, had closed down. When the lights are out, the doors are locked and the driveway's empty, you start to think that no one is home anymore.

  10. Jonh Ingham says Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello....that's a holy trinity isn't it? Which must make their manager Jake Riviera God?

  11. dermahrk says If so, there's trouble in heaven. I read that the reason that Dave and Nick no longer speak is that Dave feels that Nick and Jake conspired to rip him off financially, somehow.

  12. Jonh Ingham says I didn't know that. Sad when friends start thinking like that.

  13. Mike the Knife says I remember Jake being a jerk, but perhaps that was just a managerial pose. Meanwhile, the ever-reliable (heh) Wikipedia confirms the bypass and a life of semi-retirement in his native Wales, and also tells us "2007 marked a return to touring for Edmunds, alongside fellow rock protagonist Joe Brown on a lengthy jaunt around the UK."
