WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

The Dave Clark Five

Posted about 1 year ago
Having just entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two weeks after the death of lead singer Mike Smith, this fabulous little tune by the DC5 came on the iPod this week and carried me back. I wondered ??why hasn't anyone posted any DC5 music on MOG??? Then it hit me. Other than a best of double-CD released 15 years ago, there has been NO Dave Clark Five product available since the death of vinyl (please, no comments about how it's ??back??). I was lucky enough to have picked up that Best Of shortly after release, which now sells for $100-125, used. But - 28 tracks were just released on iTunes and are available there. Besides Mike's gritty vocals, this track also gives an upfront treatment to his keyboards, that cheesy little Farfisa sound front and center (where egomaniac - see above shot - Dave Clark's drums usually are). Hey, drummers out there...(if you can read)..is Dave Clark's drumming any good at all? It never impressed me, but I'm no skin-beater. As many know, Clark owns the masters to their recordings and is apparently waiting for some gold mine before the original LPs are released on CD. Dave, the time is *now*...actually, the time was about 25 years ago, before half your fans preceded Mike Smith to the great beyond.

  1. deedee says You know, it kind of doesn't matter whether they're technically any good (I'm no musician but that drumming does seem, well, basic). Maybe it's just the boomer in me, but I find them completely irresistible.

  2. waydutch says Yeah, I agree totally - THIS, NOW would be the time to re-release that goldmine! Hall of Fame induction, Mike's death, not meaning to be cynical here, but what better marketing window is going to come along again? Found this to contribute: (love Mike's smirk and making faces at the camera)

  3. dermahrk says At this point, none, but for all his professed business smarts, I'm not sure Dave Clark will see it that way. Yup, I love Mike. Seems like the best ones are the first to go.

Yeah...unsure why Dave Clark has been holding out all these years for the bigger paycheck. Don't know how many copies Hollywood Records put out of that compilation but it is unbelievable how many calls we get at the radio station asking if it would be possible to get a copy. Naturally the number of calls increased after Mike Smith's passing and now that VH-1 Classic has aired the Hall Of Fame this week - we've been averaging about five calls a day. It may sound like a low number but when you consider that we were averaging that many calls a month for the last fifteen years or so...that says something. That's just people taking the time to call a radio station...how many others are out there are searching? As you stated...how many of those around when the charts were filled DC5 will still be alive when Dave Clark finally releases the material? iTunes appears to be a step in the right direction - assuming those Baby Boomers who were in their teens in the mid sixties are flocking to iTunes for the Dave Clark Five. Not to be morbid...but Dave Clark may pass away before a deal is struck.

  5. Spike says In '64 and '65 alone, they had seven LPs, none in stereo, all musically solid, with not much variety of sound but a lot of energy. The track above sounds like they remastered it with more presence or proximity than the original vinyl. We have little idea of how often we have bought an item that seems to us to be one more item on our shelf, but which other people are madly punishing themselves for not buying because it's no longer available. Cackle cackle.

  6. dermahrk says Yeah, I've been on both sides of THAT fence. This week my $55 copy of the first Moby Grape album arrived. If I'd bought it a few months ago, $17.

  7. Spike says "Omaha" would have been even more splendid had Moby Grape repeated their wondrous guitar-duet intro at various other parts of the song.

  8. Mike the Knife says Second-guessing a classic, Spike? AFAIC, "Omaha" is just right the way it is. Re: The DC5: "Glad All Over," "Bits & Pieces," "Catch Us If You Can," "Because," and, certainly "Can't You See That She's Mine." 'Nuff said?

  9. Spike says Actually Mike, nuff not said: your second sentence should be, "AFAIC, 'Omaha' is right just the way it is." But about the meaning of the acronym AFAIC, I'm ignorant but wishing not to be. I ear-checked your song list and it's right on.

  10. Mike the Knife says As far as I'm concerned..."just right" is just right, like Baby Bear's porridge.

  11. Jonh Ingham says Dave Clark also owns the rights to Ready Steady Go and when will that ever see the light of day?

  12. dermahrk says There was some program here in the U.S., in the 1980s I think, that had RSG excerpts, over a few episodes. It may've been on HBO. The mind is fuzzy. During my sojourns in the UK and Ireland I have seen some programs with black and white excerpts from the 60s, but couldn't tell you if they were RSG clips.

  13. Jonh Ingham says You can tell RSG because it looks very Pop with big posters around the set and behind the band, there's an audience dancing made up mostly of Mods, and often the band plays live. A lot of the Stones UK vids from this period are RSG. And Cathy MacGowan - she was the presenter with long straight hair - another giveaway.

  14. uncle creepy says I like the DC5 "Try Too Hard" album (1966), 3 real good tracks including the title song. One of the weirdest mixes I've ever heard is the reprocessed stereo version of "Try Too Hard" on their 2nd greatest hits album (stereo). There are some true stereo DC5 mixes, hard to find now but maybe someday... Hope you'll post some of the Grape remastered 1st!
