Dave Edmunds - rockin' Cajun-style

Posted almost 4 years ago
I own a pretty complete collection of Dave Edmunds. First exposed to him in the 70s when he covered, and improved upon, Elvis Costello’s ??Girls Talk??, I’ve been a fan ever since. His fabulous guitar work and often-stellar vocals have produced a plethora of great tracks. But one of my favorite albums is ??D.E. 7th?? (Dave’s seventh solo release – duh!), which covers a lot of musical ground and is damn near irresistible. One of the best tracks on there is this one, ??Bail You Out??, a Cajun-styled romp which will have you dancing in your chair. Written by a pretty obscure Chris Rees.

  1. Mike the Knife says Yo, man! You gotta hear his early '70s hit cover of "I Hear You Knockin'" (a Dave Bartholomew/Pearl King song first recorded by Smiley Lewis) - and his phenomenal production work on some crucial recordings by the Flamin' Groovies, including the Shake Some Action album and the "Slow Death" EP. Real rock for now people, as his buddy and sometime bandmate Nick Lowe might say.

  3. zarpex says I seem to be having the devil of a time posting a comment; mog must be glitching... Basic point: Dave Edmunds wasn't the most original rocker, but he was damned reliable. My own fave was "Crawling from the Wreckage," but everyone knows that one (or should). Good call.

  4. cpetersonart3 says My worship with Dave Edmunds guitar playing started with Love Sculpture where he ripped Khachaturian's Sabre Dance to shreds.

  5. Spike says I have and like all his albums up through Riff Raff (1984), but don't know anything about later ones. Are there any must-haves that came later?

  6. dermahrk says I think his stuff got a little spottier as time went on, but there are essential tracks on almost every subsequent album. A quick review of what remains after culling on the iPod: Plugged In: 7 tracks I Hear You Rockin' (live): 6 tracks Hand Picked Musical Fantasies: 6 tracks A Pile of Rock (live): 3 tracks Closer To The Flame: 8 tracks

Holy smoke! This is one of my fave Dave albums! The songs that we still play on the air the most are "Paula Meet Jeanne" and "One More Night" but all of the songs are killer!

Good to see someone digs this underrated musical gem.

  9. Spike says Time Machine, you convinced me to listen to those two songs, and they're great. I'd had them, but had no idea. It's always a thrill to notice Albert Lee leading the way. "One More Night" works wonders with only a voice and a piano.
