Buckwheat Zydeco: I'm no Cajun critic, but I know what I like

Posted about 4 years ago
I must confess ignorance here. I cannot tell you what distinguishes Cajun from Zydeco. I know next to nothing about this (these) genres. But I do know this: I love Buckwheat Zydeco. After being exposed to this track on a Paste Magazine Sampler I had to go out and buy a couple of the man's CDs. Is there ANYTHING that is a better representation of good-time music than this? A video with Dwight Yoakam, doing the Hank Williams classic ??Hey Good Lookin'??. He's been releasing records since 1979, has at least 15 albums out, and his real name is Stanley Dural. I'm told he is playing a more modernized, rock-oriented version of Zydeco music, but I know nothing. Who can educate me? If I love Buckwheat, who else should I be listening to? Another great track, ??Changes??, is in comments. If I can get it to download, of course...

  2. Spike says Great tuneage here. Zydeco is African-American, and cajun is white. Heard of but not heard B.Z. before. "Changes" indicates that he's continuing the tradition of earlier zydeco guys like Clifton Chenier of playing recent r & b styles.

  3. MasonJar says If I'm not mistaken that's David Hidalgo from Los Lobos in that video as well. There's no feeling but happiness that can emerge when listening to zydeco music. Thanks, Dermahrk!
