Two more silky wonders from The Fleetwoods

Posted about 4 years ago
Ok, I've listened to all of the Best Of collection I bought recently and wanted to share two more gems (previous post *"here":http://mog.com/dermahrk/blog_post/131122*). The first is a marvelous version of the old classic "What'll I Do" which varies from the male lead & two female backup configuration they got locked into due to their hits. This sounds double-tracked and Gary, the male lead, is just one member of the ensemble. Then, in comments, another a capella version of one of their hits ??Mr. Blue??. Enjoy. And, the only video footage available on YouTube, the Fleetwoods on Ed Sullivan. Poorly synched, I’ve never seen a more uncomfortable-looking performer than Gary lip-synching his way through their biggest hit in a ridiculous cowboy getup.

  2. emscee says Something worth noting about The Fleetwoods: a B-side of theirs, "They Tell Me It's Summer," was the first recording of a Randy Newman song. While I'm quite fond of their two major hits, "Mr. Blue" and "Come Softly To Me," I find two of their other singles, "The Great Imposter" and "Tragedy," almost David Lynchian in their soft-spoken, eerily calm sense of loss.

Yeah..."The Great Imposter" is a great song. That was my first exposure to The Fleetwoods. Couldn't get enough of that song as a child. Dark but extremely melodic and catchy.

Never saw that footage from Ed Sullivan before and the cowboy get-up did catch me off guard. Interesting to note that there was actually a fire on the set for the performance.

Don't know why but of the numerous versions of "What'll I Do" it's the recording done by Linda Rondstadt that I find to be a great recorded performance.

  4. Mike the Knife says Can't help but imagine Richie Cunningham trying to cop a feel from a cheerleader whenever I hear "Come Softly To Me." (Still, I remain crazy about the song.)

  5. Bartleby says I've loved vocal groups - I think it's got to do with the immediacy of the human voice which moves you right from the first note. @Mike: You dirty cat, I like your visualisation. Thanks for the LOL.

  6. Jonh Ingham says Always loved 'Mr. Blue'. That album cover is bizarre - the women look twice as old as he does. Makes it look like some ad for a young guy-old girls porn site!
