Joe Cocker supplies my Jeff Lynne (ELO) fix

Posted about 1 year ago
Although Joe looks a bit too much like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on this cover, I'm willing to overlook that to get my Jeff Lynne fix. Yes boys and girls, I'm looking for *more* at the barrel-bottom. Got all of ELO, Jeff's solo release, Idle Race, the Move, Wilburys. Of late I've been picking ELO box set bonus tracks off of iTunes. Then I found the Jeff Lynne Song Database (jefflynnesongs.com), and that supplied a new list of Lynne-written songs recorded by others. (note to MOG: I am now trying to find pictures with greater width than height to try to minimize the stretch-mark effect that all photos now get. *FIX THIS*.)Which leads me to this gem, the title track from Joe Cocker's album ??Night Calls??. Written by Jeff, you can tell almost immediately that it's his song. It sounds like a lost ELO track. So, for any other Lynne fanatics out there, enjoy!

  1. Jammy Jeff says You've gotta hand it to Joe, he never loses the ability to interpret someone else's writing really well. I saw him on TV the other night and he's still got it. I didn't know you were such a Jeff Lynne expert! I like that song a lot. Cocker adds that Pop/bluesy feel through his voice, and if you listen to the backing vocals the harmonies are ELO through and through. Good stuff

  2. wdog says Hey, nice pick! I'm not enough of a Jeff Lynne fan to have been following him since ELO, however, their music definitely doesn't get the attention anymore that it deserves.. in these days of retro rock stations giving us constant slices of John Cougar and Bob Seger, you almost never hear songs like Evil Woman or Telephone Line. I actually picked up "All Over the World" a few weeks ago, and it's been in my car cd ever since.. thanks Dermahrk for the tip on an album I never would have come across but for your help.

  3. dachmo says I've been trolling for early The Move stuff as well although not with the same obsessive fervor as you. I stop with Jeff/ELO around '79-'80. Thanks for the track.

  5. Bartleby says It does sound so unmistakably Lynnean. Even with Mr Cocker's vocals.

  6. Jonh Ingham says Nice. I wonder who thought to put the two of them together.
