Shitty way to end the year - another sad chapter in the saga of Moby Grape

Posted about 2 years ago
(Note the killer live track included above)Moby Grape CDs have been out of print for a long, long time. They have been pretty much unable to perform under their own name for decades due to the interference of their ex-manager professional-asswipe Matthew Katz. In 2007, that supposedly changed and some kind of agreement was reached. First a compilation of their material came out, then all of their albums were re-issued, remastered with bonus tracks, by the excellent label Sundazed. I passed on the 1st album at the timesince I already had it, as well as all of the bonus tracks on the "Vintage" 2-CD box set that was released maybe a decade ago. But I got the rest, although it seemed to take a strangely long time for them to come into stock and be shipped out. Yesterday I thought - well, I liked the other new CDs so much, maybe I should go back and purchase that re-mastered first album anyway, for the artifact, the re-mastering and, hell, to give the band I love so much a few more shekels. So, I go to Amazon and it says the album is only available - used for - ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS! WTF? Then I read this review on the site by David Hoeltje (Santa Clarita, CA United States) (quote: I checked the Sundazed site today and as of November 8, 2007 they are stating that Sony/BMG (at the behest of Matthew Katz?) has pulled the plug on their dist. rights to first 3 Grape CD's - Moby Grape & Wow/Grape Jam (originally a double LP set, but released as two seperate cd's by Sundazed). Not sure if it's permanent but you might want to pick these up now as Amazon seems to have stock that may either sell thru quickly or be pulled from circulation. The remastering on the first, Moby Grape, in particular is just wonderful. You can hear subtle vocal and instrumental parts that were buried in all previous incarnations of this essential recording. So don't hesitate...buy it now and cross your fingers and hope that the surviving band mambers actually make something off of this latest developing, but hopefully short-term, debacle. 12/11/07 - Looks like the Grape have gotten screwed again. Amazon and the rest of the world seem to have sold thru the stock that got out before the title was pulled from distribution. What a shame, this is one of the top 30 Essential recordings from the '60's and it should be available for the uninitiated to discover. I don't know the particulars, but if this latest screwing of the band was done by or because of Matthew Katz he should be ashamed. Having this music available for posterity is more important than his ego or his needing a new BMW every year. As a buyer for a major Distributor in the mid 1970's I had to deal with him on several occassions (he owns the San Francisco Sounds label) and he certainly seemed to be as big a dick as everyone makes him out to be. What a sad, tragic affair. (unquote)This really breaks my heart, as I hoped that they could get some money and interest out of the reissues, and the remaining living members might even tour a bit, and I could possibly finally see them, aged but live in person. That looks a LOT less likely now.

  1. Bartleby says There are artists who seem cursed - no matter how much the public wants to hear them, their records is either locked in safe boxes (the masters never to be touched by anyone) or distribution doesn't follow. Pity really because Moby Grape is one those bands who deserve better.

Good grief! This sort of business behavior has to stop. Give artists a chance to have their music around forty years after the fact. Many acts who are no longer with us never had the opportunity to hear their music make it to the digital age or even get to perform on stage. This is simply a question of morals and it is wrong.

Moby Grape deserve their musical legacy!

  4. Mike the Knife says One of my all-times. MOGged about them a while back: http://mog.com/Mike_the_Knife/blog_post/84699 Although the body of work was so small, they still deserve every accolade. Hard-luck indeed.

  5. uncle creepy says 3 lead guitars rocking out on numbers like Omaha and Fall On You... they buffaloed the Springfield, and flew higher than The Byrds, for a moment or 2 anyway... The live Omaha you kindly shared is super crisp - good find, old man! ^ ^ Here's the unedited studio version of Fall On You with booth banter, off the not-so-rare Vintage MG 2-CD set many of us already have, yeah... but it's a kick in the head, so c'mon everybody, play it again! Can someone please post a track from the supposedly superior-sounding Sundazed CD of the 1st Moby Grape album? It's a cryan shame they had to pull the 1st 3 MG lp remasters. Get real! Man, Katz stinks. Maybe he was a convenient evil. Maybe not! He even tried to sign the Flamin Groovies early on - and Cyril had already heard the stories. And then there was Sol Zaentz. He tried to sign Cyril's 1st band Lost and Found in 1965 when Fantasy Records was still in San Francisco. Cyril found the unsigned contract in a drawer a few months back, surely a lost then found item for the books. Post-Creedence Clearwater Revival John Fogerty songs, "Zanz Kant Danz", "The Old Man Down the Road", and "Mr. Greed" from Fogerty's album Centerfield are thinly veiled slams at Zaentz. Zaentz brought a series of lawsuits against Fogerty, claiming defamation of character for the lyric "Zanz can't dance but he'll steal your money", and also claiming that the fundamental music in "The Old Man Down the Road" was a lift from the Fantasy-copyrighted-but-Fogerty-written song "Run Through the Jungle" from CCR's smash 1970 album Cosmo's Factory. Zaentz won on the defamation issue, forcing Warner Bros. and Fogerty to change the title and lyric to "Vanz Can't Dance", but lost on the copyright issue. The judge found that an artist cannot plagiarize himself.

  7. uncle creepy says Fall On You (Lyrics by Moby Grape) Yes, I know, it's fallin' Yes, I know, it's fallin' Did you ever get the feeling That your baby's gonna set you free? Won't she tell you why it's over? Do you sit and wonder "Was it me?" You try and tell her she'll be sorry It'll happen with somebody new But all the time you're worried 'bout The pain that's gonna fall on you You forgot to make a payment And they're gonna disconnect your phone You better pay up what you owe They're gonna try and repossess your home They want their bread in the morning Plus your next month's payment, too But all the time you're worried 'bout The pain that's gonna fall on you You caught your baby cheatin' But you say you love her any way But all the time you're thinkin' Just to find a way to make her pay You think to leave her broken hearted Is the only thing that you can do But all the time you're worried 'bout The pain that's gonna fall on you Yes, I know, it's fallin' Yes, I know, it's fallin' (added here 'cause they sing 'em so fast)

  8. dermahrk says Not sure if anyone will see this, but two updates: 1) It is indeed a new lawsuit filed by Matthew Katz that pulled the CDs off the market. Fuck You, Katz! 2) The full album (including bonus tracks) is available on iTunes. I'm monitoring Ebay, which has new copies going up for sale daily, and selling in the $60 range for a physical copy.
