WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

First MOG post about - Lenny Bruce

Posted 6 months ago

Hard to believe that no one has ever posted about, much less a track from, iconic comedian Lenny Bruce, who OD'd in 1966. But it's true. Here is the longest and funniest bit from his LP "Togetherness", mocking the vanity of show business. 50 years since it was released, even someone as aged as I don't get all of the references, but that's no hindrance. Warning: it's 19 minutes long, but worth it.

This is good Mark. I love Bruce.

While technically a post about Lenny I did pretend to write him a letter back when Carlin died.

    If your interested you can check it out here;

    Dear Lenny ....

I haven't worn my 'Bruce' face for a while. Maybe that'll change.

Thanks, Chris. I only have this one LP (though I owned the 2-disc set released by Zappa's label - which has since been lost or stolen) and would love to hear more.

I didn't always find him funny, which isn't to say I didn't think he was great. A lot of times he wasn't trying to be funny.Glad to have him in the MOS. Nice one,Mark.

Lenny has always been a favorite in my household.  Even after all of these decades I still find myself singing a song that he did on Steve Allen's television show almost every day of my life.  I have it on a cassette and if I ever run across it - I'll be sure to post it.

I got through about half of it, before going to another Mogger's profile page crashed my browser (tabs are great, except in these cases). I'll find time to get to the rest later.

I don't think I ever heard him before, although I'd heard of him. John Lovetz has a similar delivery. I'll bet he modeled it after Lenny.

Of all the people I could have imagined posting about Bruce, I have to confess, you were just about the last. But this is a strange and rewarding bit...if that's the right word for something that lasts longer than many baseball games....

And if you have just discovered Lenny (who wasn't always funny, esp. towards the end) may I suggest his royal hipness, Lord Buckley? A very influential guy. Many  comedians rate him highly...

@ Cody - yeah, the 2-LP set from late in his career, when he was obsessed with the obscenity case against him, wasn't a barrel o' laughs. This LP is spotty, but when he hits it (as he does in this bit), it's gold.

@ivylander - the impressions people get about me are sometimes mystifying. Why would I not like Lenny?

@ Rawkkiddoh - that new avatar is kinda scary - it makes you look like Chucky. Is that a wig?

@Downhome - I'm gonna check out that link right now.

sadly it is not. I lost a bet to my fourth graders, had to dye my hair as a result. No worries though, on Friday my two top readers get to cut it all off...........that means no more chucky

You give your all (i.e. hair) to your profession. Admirable, but I await a less frightening avatar. ;-)

Well, Bruce is pretty much pure id, while I think of you as someone whose superego is pretty firmly in charge of things. (Yes, I agree that Freud is essentially full of shit, but I can go along with him on this...)

Dermahrk, your playful, spontaneous Mogger of the Week statement long ago is basically the funniest, so you do have some id.  I keep hearing about this Freud guy, enough to make me think I have to tackle his tomes in order to hold my own at dinner parties, but now hearing that he's full of it (in other words, empty), I'm spared that laborious labor.  Bruce here, though, while not necessarily side-splitting, narrates a rich satiric panorama of the variety show world of his day.  I love it!

When I began to suspect that a knowledge of Freud was necessary for me to maintain my friendships, I ditched those friends and joined MOG.
