Dog lover songs (#2)

Posted about 1 year ago
I am a sucker for almost any song that extols the joys (and eventual sorrows) of sharing life with a dog. This is one example – from the debut album by Nellie McKay, possibly my favorite of all of her songs. Nellie is an unreconstructed animal lover, very talented and, unfortunately, resistant to anyone trying to edit her output which, IMHO, she sorely needs. She left Columbia because they wanted to trim her follow-up release, Pretty Little Head which, as released, was one of my biggest disappointments of 2006. But enough negativity. Enjoy Nellie’s ode to doggie adoption:

  1. ivylander says One obvious addition would be Nilsson's "The Puppy Song," which is every bit as cloying as the title would lead you to believe....

  2. Lizziegreeneyes says I gotta get you lads hip to _*Freebo's*_ +DOG PEOPLE+ An album entirely dedicated to dogs... will look through my stacks to see if I can find it - if I do, I'll throw it up on *M*

  4. Lizziegreeneyes says She kinda bothered me live (Nellie McKay) her attitude even before her first double album came out was that she was better than everyone else... also managed to be quite a bit late for her show at The Point... ahhh c'est la vie, but I do wish she'd take some constructive criticism here & there - would make her far more palatable.

  5. Lizziegreeneyes says I also bought a copy for my friend, she's got far less albums to look through - will see if she can locate her copy :) _(yeah, IL is looking way fine these days)_ ;)

  6. dermahrk says I saw her live at Penn's Landing a summer or two ago and she was delightful then - but of course was doing no material from album #2. Lizzie, is that the same Freebo that played bass (and occasionally tuba) behind Bonnie Raitt for years and years? Ivylander, who IS that new avatar? Looks presidential....

  8. ivylander says It's a portrait of Stendhal, the guy who wrote "The Red And The Black." A truly great novel.

  13. waydutch says Great little song - thanks for the introduction to Nellie. So, take it her first Columbia release, Get Away from Me, would be her best?

  14. SheDontUseJelly says Speaking of the joys (and the eventual sorrows) that come with dog ownership, I saw Year of the Dog this weekend with Molly Shannon. It was strange, yet endearing. And it made me cry.

  16. dermahrk says FastRMacR: I love that. "I just wanna lick your chin again"... What is up with MOG (again....)? I got no notices of the last half-dozen comments. Brandnewfriend, I will send you a MOGmail explaining how to attach... Waydutch, where ya been? Quiet lately. SheDontUseJelly - I had that movie on my Netflix queue because it got good reviews, but took it off later because of how much I HATE Molly Shannon from her days on SNL. Maybe I could overcome that...and dogs always make you cry, sooner or later. nice little instrumental, soulrocket. And I kind of collect songs with bulldogs in the title or lyrics, for some odd reason.

  17. dermahrk says Waydutch, yes, that first album is a keeper, although I probably only kept a half-dozen songs on the iPod from it. Also consider going to iTunes and cherry-picking.

  18. Mike the Knife says I just like her, even her attitude. I figure she should have her artistic freedom if she can swing it, and the rest of us will sort it out. Pretty little head indeed. BTW, this performance on Letterman is what first won my heart (prior to her playing any Left Coast shows such as the wonderful one I caught at the Independent).

  19. The Time Machine says

Yeah...I saw that performance on Letterman too. I've been digging her stuff after seeing her on The Music Room perhaps a year before the first album came out. Couldn't wait to hear it. Loved it. Liked the next two releases as well. Wasn't disappointed like you were but I was taken aback by the label's constant use of the quote saying that she was a cross between Eminem and Doris Day. Good grief.

I was going to add "Martha My Dear" to the list but see that Ivylander already wondered why it wasn't mentioned.
