Christmas tracks that don't suck #1

Posted over 4 years ago
Ok, here's the thing. Christmas music is generally pretty bad. I don't really enjoy listening to it. UNLESS. You forget about the genre entirely and just listen to songs that 1) Are good2) have some peripheral relationship to Christmas or "the holidays"How do I define good Christmas music? It never leaves the iPod, and I never skip past it no matter what time of the year it comes on. Great music is great music. And, ok, this first installment is not really music. Kind of. It's the first fan club 45 RPM that the Beatles sent to their fan club members in Britain in 1963. The front cover:The back cover:And, no, I am not lucky enough to own a copy, although I did snag this bootleg LP from the racks They did this for several years but, after drugs entered the picture they became less fun and more weird.

  1. contrabandwidth says I heard some of theses on some Beatles show that was on on Sunday mornings. What fun! No wonder the Beatles were so damn marketable!

  2. yotochan says What a treat, to actually hear people use the term "that's really gear", was really gear. This was back in the days when my biggest worry was not getting my homework done because I'd always wait till Sunday night. Thanks, great post as usual.

  5. FastRMacR says Lovely - one of my favorite LPs for the season! The laughing and giggling is infectious from those early ones indeed. "Stop, stop shouting those animals!" All the tracks are an awesome insight into their progressions and interaction through the years (and the Macca tune in '68 is too cool). Thanks for the peppermint cremes and chocolate drops. ....dead pleased. ;-)

  10. ivylander says This is just so charming. I've always heard about these recordings and been curious about them. Thanks for finally satisfying a lingering curiosity. As for Christmas music that doesn't suck, it has oft been noted, and with good reason, that you can't go wrong with Phil Spector's "A Christmas Gift For You." In a completely different vein, I've always been partial, of a Christmas morn, to a sturdy fire, a mug of strong coffee, a quiet family and John Fahey.... ~Vfw0tOnE39w.mp3~

  11. dermahrk says Lovely, Bill. Thanks. I own that Phil Spector Christmas CD and have to agree. It came out along with the Phil Spector "Back to Mono" 4-CD set which now sells at a ridiculously low price. Bullets not included.

  16. marknavl says Oh BTW...I have the 45's of these in my collection and an Apple version of the LP with all of them on it. It's insane the cash I've spent on my collection but we all have our hobbies. I just got more into Beatle records than stamps (for instance). It's only rock'n' roll but I like it.
