"New" Hank Williams - Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain

Posted 10 months ago

For those that may've been too busy living under a rock, a three-CD treasure trove of unreleased recordings of Hank Williams was recently released after decades of legal battling (which the Williams family won).

These were recorded for an early morning radio show and feature many songs never recorded elsewhere, including this one: Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain. This song is now associated with Willie Nelson, since his version of it was a huge hit in 1975, but it was written by Hank's producer and music publisher Fred Rose. It was first released in 1946 and was recorded by Roy Acuff and many others.

This song leads off the box set (which I am still working my way through). The good news is that it sounds as though there are more such releases coming.

I am a recent Hank convert (see my posts of a year or so ago by searching for Hank Williams on MOG) but a diehard one. Enjoy.

Hank Williams.  His songs have become part of American cuture, drifting across demographic lines.

On another note,  my computer seems to have picked up a vicious virus and I'm losing control....so I may disappear for a bit.

Lovely. For some reason, when I was 12-13 a kid down the street developed this obsession with Hank Williams. At that time, the five-and-dimes had hundreds and hundreds of cutouts available at two and three bucks a pop - including many Hank albums. This kid bought them all and we listened to them in his basement, sometimes for an entire afternoon. Until you brought him back, it had been literally decades since i had heard him. But that phrasing appears to be imprinted on my brain; it comes back instantly.

If you're ever in Shreveport go to the Auditorium where the Hayride was broadcast. It's pretty much exactly as it was. You can stand on the stage right on the spot where he stood, singing all those great songs. Elvis stood there too. It's a pretty spooky experience.

Also, there's a live album that came out in the UK about 4 years ago with all sorts of radio shows, including Armed Forces in Germany. (Probably a lot of the same stuff on your set.)

Now I'm really going to have to get that box set.  If I don't, others will suffer.

In my youth, I learned that the steel guitar was taboo, and part of me (my gut) knew that "Sleepwalk" by Santo & Johnny was an inexcusable affront to normal sensibilities.  To Sixties folkies like me, bluegrass and old-timey music were happening genres, but more recent c & w was strictly trailer trash.  In maybe 1974 somehow the LP of Hank Williams greatest hits maneuvered its way into my purchasing hands at a record store.  Around that time, I mentioned to a friend that I liked the sound of a new hit, "Okie from Muskogie," on the radio, and, appalled, he asked me, "How could you?"

Ah, the old "I don't love music, I love COOL music" rap. This isn't even my favorite song so far on the new set. I'll post another or two later this weekend.

I'm too old-school to know much about even this "old" rap of which you speak.  Help me to learn more.

Sweet!  Excellent song choice.  Thanks for posting this one.

Have you heard Norah Jones perform one of his unfinished songs?  She finished it and actually now has co-credit.  She did a good job because it sounds like vintage Hank Williams.  Saw her perform it with Elvis Costello, John Mellencamp, Rosanne Cash and Kris Kristofferson last week on television.

The album comes out at some point this year.  The show was taped last year so it may be out already.  Time to comb the net.
