Jules Shear 101 - Groups - Reckless Sleepers

Posted over 4 years ago
(Sixth in a series)In 1988, the group Reckless Sleepers came together. Jules Shear was the lead vocalist in the group. Initially Elliot Easton (lead guitarist for The Cars) was to be a member as well, but that didn't work out, and Elliot instead ended up recording a solo record (Change No Change) with Jules doing all of the co-writing.Guitarist Jimmy Vivino should be familiar to anyone who watches Conan O'Brien, as he is in the house band the Max Weinberg Seven, and leads it when Max is on tour with Springsteen. The debut (and only) CD is pretty chock-full of interesting tunes, but only one was written by Jules: "If We Never Meet Again". Easily the best song on the CD, it was released as the only single (with video) and covered by many other artists.A partial clip can be found here:and the full track is here:The song has become a minor classic, and two GREAT covers have been done. The first was by Roger McGuinn (leader of the Byrds), given a Byrds-y treatment on his solo CD "Back From Rio". The second, probably lesser-known cover was by the group Orleans ("Still The One, Dance With Me") when John Hall and band reunited to record a CD named "Drive". It may be my favorite version of the song. Both covers are included in the Comments section if you want to hear them (which I strongly recommend, of course). So is that one CD the entire output related to Reckless Sleepers? Not quite. I.R.S. Records also released a promotional disc:This featured a silly 8 minute skit with Cyndi Lauper and the Bangles lauding Jules Shear and an overview of his career, as well as two different edits of the RS single. Aaaaand, the group did cover one song, written by soul artist William Bell, called "Every Day Will Be Like A Holiday" for an I.R.S. Christmas compiliation "Just In Time For Christmas":This is probably the rarest of all of their material, so for those interested, the track is also in Comments. After Reckless Sleepers, Jules' third group, he returned to making solo records for quite some time.

  3. scotfree says HEY EVERYBODY! LISTEN TO dermahrk HERE, THIS IS A GGGRREAT RECORDING!!!! There D, hope that shout-out serves the purpose. Really, this is one tremendous piece of power-pop. I tend to look at it as the summary of the genre. One of those you pop in the player and take it out a week later. Only the best. Don't have it with me at the mo, but is it true only one song is composed by Jules? Even so, his influence is all over it, but still a real band effort. Great high-energy songs ("Tried to Please Her"), tear-wrenching ballads ("I Wake Up Loving You"), tongue-in-cheek sexual innuendo ("Big Before It Bursts") - cystalline production; a real treasure. Was not aware of the Christmas release, so you've given me an early present! Thanks! And the cool covers, this is really a cool post D, great work and thanks!!

  5. dermahrk says Thanks to both Scot and walkingthecow. I don't expect to get a lot of response to this series, but if I can leave a semi-permanent place on the net where people can end up finding out Jules' history with the ability to listen to things, I'll be happy. Scot, I always thought that Jules wrote or at least co-wrote the entire album myself, but don't remember if there are credits on the CD booklet. When I went to allmusic.com to check my facts I found that all tracks but one are listed as authored by other band members. It could be incorrect, but it's the best info available at the moment. If I discover something different, I will post an additional comment.

  6. mousetrap says That Reckless Sleepers version of "Every Day Will Be Like A Holiday" is probably one of my top 10 Christmas songs - right up there with "Christmas Is Coming" by The Payola$. (What?! You've never heard it? Well, maybe I'll have to post it a little closer to the actual holiday. Then again, why wait? Stores around here have had Christmas shit up for TWO WEEKS ALREADY!!! It's enough to drive a guy to mayhem...) But I digress - back to the song. It's always fascinated me that if you go by the lyrics alone, this isn't really a Christmas song. The point of the song is that every day will be like a holiday, because the singer will have his baby with him. But add some sleigh bells in the rhythm section, plus that clever echo of "Jingle Bells" at 2:16, and there's no mistaking the seasonal emphasis. These touches are lifted from the original William Bell version from 1967 on Stax, by the way. The song was co-written by Bell and Booker T. "Green Onions" Jones.

  8. scotfree says Hey dermahrk, I'm checkin' the CD right now and Jules does co-write everything else. "If We Never Meet Again" is credited just to him, eight of the other tracks are penned by the group with Vivino on 5 of those. "This Heart" is Jules and Mike Campbell. Hope ya don't mind me kickin' in the title track, 80's synths and all!! ~bLWZs4dUyLK.mp3~
