WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

My favorite obscure Byrds song

She Don't Care About Time - (original mono single version, bonus track)
Of the many songs by the Byrds that I love, this is the one that has played hard-to-get for some 40 years. Written by Gene Clark, "She Don't Care About Time", it was the flip side to the single "Turn Turn Turn" and was just as good as, if not even better than, the A-side.Yet, it did not make the album of the same name, which instead included puzzlers like "Oh Susannah".So a decade or two ago, when that first box set of 4 CDs came out by the Byrds, I was thrilled. For a bit. The booklet was nice, but the CD covers were ugly, featured no pictures of the band, just crappy paintings and trite titles. And, when I finally got to "She Don't Care About Time", they had NOT included the single B-side version, but replaced it with some crappy, unreleased, clearly inferior version. It was not until a few years ago, when the album "Turn Turn Turn" was re-mastered and released with bonus tracks, that the original B-side made its appearance again. Maybe there was some other compilation it made it onto, I don't know. Anyway, among all of my Byrds faves, this has to be in the top 6. If you care at ALL for the Byrds and have not heard this, please press play. If you've heard it before, then HEAR IT AGAIN! And, by the way, what the hell happened to Chris Hillman's hair, which was a wavy, curly mess on album #1, then suddenly became straight as an arrow for album #2? Wig? Process? Later it became curly again. WTF?

  2. Bartleby says The song's quite Byrds-y, for want of any other words.
Your post prompted a question regarding B-sides. What would a B-side be today with singles released through downloads and CDs? If the former is to replace any hard-copy release where will an amateur and collector like you go, Dermahrk?

  3. Spike says The song is a beauty. Usually the song chosen for a B-side would be unspectacular enough not to distract the radio stations from the A-side. It's fun to come upon a neglected gem like this. Let's hope that iTunes will offer it. I always loved the Byrds' "Have You Seen Her Face" from their 1967 album _Younger Than Yesterday_, and was ready to mention it here as _my_ favorite Byrds obscurity, one that I imagined few humans being aware of. However, one precautionary visit to allmusic.com taught me that it has been not only on _twenty_ Byrds compilations ("Greatest Hits," "Essential," "Best of," etc.), it was also on the A-side of a 45! So much for obscurity.

  4. ivylander says I too love this song, just as I loved the Byrds back in my youth (and see no reason to shift gears now). I had an (incorrect) feeling, when I read the title of this post, that you were going to say "Lady Friend." That song is to me what "Desiree" is to the Left Banke: The song that should have been among their most beloved but somehow got lost....

  5. ivylander says Syntactical felony! What that last sentence should have said was, "To me, that song is to the Byrds what 'Desiree' is to the Left Banke." Oh, and one more thought on Byrds' B-sides: "I Knew I'd Want You." Sublime.

  6. Mike the Knife says Love the horns on "Ladyfriend," ivy. That's what I call a great B-side, too.

  7. leftoverking says i learned to play this one in high shool. i like it too. and for the chris hillman hair question, the book preflight explained that he used hair straightener at the urging of the record company to make the byrds appear more beattlesque. eventually he gave it up.

  8. Jonh Ingham says 'Ladyfriend' stands as my favourite lost Byrds song. Not just for the horns but the whole production - can't remember if it's Terry Melcher but whoever it is gets A+. And Mike, it was an A-side! [says proud owner of 7" copy].

  9. Mike the Knife says My bad, Jonh. What I meant was: "That’s what I call a great obscure single that barely broke into the U.S. Top 100, despite the band's recent history of chart success."

  10. Jonh Ingham says I should have know your fine syntactical expressionism for what it was. But it's Sunday morning at 7am and my brain and I have agreed to lead separate lives for awhile.

It's been awhile since hearing this song. Scratchy vinyl in fact. Good to know that it's finally out there on CD.
