So I guess I was onto somethinng when upon creation of my mog roughly a year ago I had listed "Mi Swing Es Tropical" as one of the tracks you should be listening to... It's on an iPod tv ad now. But here's the question, and I've never been able to either get or come up with a straight answer: "should one worry when one's favorite underground artists get into international limelight?" Is it a sign of their accessibility to the lowest common denominator or a sign of true talent? Thievery had a break with Garden State soundtrack, so did Zero 7, whose music I had recently heard in the Marriott lobby near McCormick's Place in the Chi... I just get a really mixed feeling and get confused when things like that happen.. You?

This weekend yours truly is heading to Waterloo, IA for a wedding. The wedding is my girlfriend's mom's and it's her (the mom's) first one. Tomiiko's (my GF) cousing Jason is supposedly the Wedding dj,and I'm supposed to relieve him from time to time. Originally I was gonna do the whole thing, but it's not my turf, I've no idea what peeps in Waterloo and in Cedar Valley in general get down to. I mean there's gonna be a bunch of black folk in their 40's.... And I was not about to haul the gear and wax across state lines... So...
I recorded some stuff so that I can just push play and still dj...
I want you to listen to this first installment of "Miss Jan's Wedding" by yours truly and lemme know whatcha think, please.
If you like, spread the word about the link, circulate my mix, play it at parties, give it to your friends as gifts, make babies to it, the whole thing...
Thanks.

Nice. Some choice cuts. It being a wedding and all, you might to find a track or two that comes in with a few more beats per minute so as to compel people to move. Thanks for sharing.
I have Vol.2 recorded, but my free filehost limits me to 50MB file size. Vol. 2 is around 110 bpm, while vol.1 was around 95, then there's Vol.3 with 120.... Anyone know of a free filehost with larger file sizes?
Thanks for sharing, Dennis, it's good... I mean, if it was my wedding, I'd be delighted if that's any help...
So, this is an early warning, but yours truly is picking up dj gigs again in the spring, kicking the season of with a Saturday, March 24th, 2007, showcase at Streetside Cafe,
http://www.streetsidecafe.net/
in Chicago. Midtempo old and new funk, and everything uptempo that's fit to grrove to.
Reserve the date and come out! If you like mixes I've been posting, you'll like my set!
I'll post it once I will have played it, of course!

Worry? Absolutely. In the beginning it is because of talent, but as time goes on and bands get bigger sometimes they lose sight of the reason they began making music in the first place and become more concerned with making money. It's like something very personal and private to you being taken away and given to everyone, which kind of hurts. So yeas I think there is always cause for worry.
I would much rather turn on the TV to find a Quantic tune and an iPod ad as opposed to the Sofa King wearing a crown and shouting about low prices. Why on earth would a song that you previously considered to be from someone with talent suddenly require re-evaluation as something that is "lowest common denominator" based on its exposure? Would you re-evaluate whether your favorite meal was any good based on a sudden increase in in the number of people who were eating it? A good tune is a good tune and talent is talent.
While I would like to believe the appearance of such quality music in the commercial space is a sign of good taste in the masses, it may simply be a sign that the ad producers have good taste. It's entirely possible the public hated the ad and the song.
Part of being a tastemaker means knowing about stuff that the general public doesn't know about. So once an underground resource has been brought above-ground it loses much of its caché. In that respect, you have something to worry about.
