Less a Song, More an Epic

Posted over 3 years ago
Soulfly IV by Soulfly is one of my favorite purely instrumental songs, and when I thought about writing a post on long songs, it was the first that came to mind. A quick check revealed that at 6:03, it isn't the longest song I have. Just in the limited selection of my library I have here at work currently I found that Aqueous Transmission by Incubus at 7:46 is one of my longest songs. The only one I can think of that is longer is Sway by Lostprophets at 10:24.What's the longest song in your library? To narrow things down a bit, they have to be the original version of the song (not a remix) and a studio version (not live).

  1. Puffmagic says Well, the whole album Delirium Cordia by Fantomas is one track titled "Theater Of Operations" and it's 74:16 Don't get much longer than that.

  2. Puffmagic says Beyond that I've got some Mogwai and Godspeed! You Black Emperor tracks that are over 20 minutes.

  3. democlez says Puffmagic - I think 74:16 takes the cake until DVD-Audio disks become more popular. If I had a track 74 minutes long, I would try to cut it up into sections if I could. Even though Sway by Lostprophets is one track on the CD, I really think of it as two songs (and I don't doubt it really is).

  4. Puffmagic says Well, Delirium Cordia isn't really "music" as it is 74 minutes of creepy noises, monks chanting, gothic sting arrangements and big empty silences. It's definatly not something you pop into your car on a road trip. Maybe something to play on the porch on Halloween.

  5. etcvisitor says ive got this self titled album by mammatus its 4 songs and i think it is 56 minutes. one of those songs (dragon of the deep part 2) takes up a whole side of the record... thats like 25 minutes. they sound like black sabbath and sleep and a bunch of really sludgy stoner rock. it is pretty awesome stuff, if your into that sort of thing. dont let the first track fool you it slows way down from there.

  6. lemontwist says I have Thick As A Brick by Jethro Tull on vinyl. The song takes up both songs of the 12" 33 1/3 RPM disc. It's in my old bedroom at my parent's house so I can't easily check how long it is, but I know for sure that's the longest song in my collection. There's another song I have that takes up an entire side of a 12" 33 1/3 which is In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly, I think it's only like 20 minutes though.

  7. samuraijohnny says My favorite composition of all time, Bitches Brew off of Mile's album of the same name, clocks in at 27 minutes. My favorite composition from last year, The Way Up by Pat Metheny Group, clocks in at about 67 minutes. It takes a few listens of both pieces to really hear everything going on, but it's definitely time well spent.

  9. democlez says lemontwist - Yeah In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida! samuraijohnny - I'll have to check out _The Way Up_ , I have _The Roots of Coincidence_ by Pat Metheny Group and I love it. Takeshi Kovacs - That's ridiculous. The original piano tune is only 20 minutes though.
