YOU CAN'T NOT GET NO SATISFACTION

Happy Canada Day, eh?

What does it mean to me to be Canadian? Everything I suppose. I love everything about this country from our pride, friendliness and tolerance to our varied climates from one end of our vast land to the other. Here are a few more things I love about my native land:

  • I love how our ice tea is sweet and not just cold tea.
  • I love Ceasars.
  • As a child, I loved "The Friendly Giant" (though I find it a bit creepy looking back on it now)

  • I love Newfies (the people of Newfoundland), they are particularly friendly Canadians, loyal to even their casual friends, and they have one of my favorite accents

Here's a little primer on how Canada works for native and non-native Canucks alike:

Newfies sound like they have a bit of the Scottish brogue in their speech.

I've already waxed eloquent on Capndad's post about my secret love of the Great White North, so I won't go into it again.  I'll just say happy Canada Day to you and yours!

One question--your iced tea is sweet?  As in, made with sugar?  One of the common perceptions here in the southern US is that it's impossible to get a glass of sweet tea anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line (the line dividing "northern" and "southern" states).  Are we wrong in this?

If you ask for Ice Tea anywhere in Canada besides cities close to the US border, you will get a fountain drink that is more sugar than tea, but is still a very refreshing drink. I don't know how available sweet iced tea is in the US since I haven't done much traveling there, but I do know that you have to ask for sweet iced tea specifically whereas it's a given in most of Canada.

The first time I had a sugar-less iced tea was in Vancouver and it was unpleasant surprise. It was like the first time I had calamari when I mistook it for an onion ring... I'm sure I would have enjoyed it if I had tried it on purpose, but the unexpected taste really put me off it and ruined the experience for me.

Guess you noticed I'm a Matt Good shill :-)

A troubled but beautiful artist who has really written some wonderfu and gripping tunes.

    Gotta love those manic depressives!

    Loved the post - Thanks

    I did notice that :)

I was going to attach 'Avalanche' to this post but saw you had beat me to it a few months ago. I love that track, and a majority of Matt's other work.

That's not Grapes' dog is it? (hands up who knows what I'm talking about?)

Geez, WAS "Friendly" really from BC?

And that Rick Mercer report on Everything You Need to Know... is actually true.

    Great Post Democlez.

Thanks Naomi. I think all Canadian children of the 80s (ish) grew up on a steady diet of Friendly Giant, Transformers, Tin Tin (if you're Québécois) and let us not forget:
