... or would 'melodic' be a better description? I posted before how I'm constantly trying to get into metal, and Sam posted about liking metal that is fast and complex, so I thought I would try to describe how I like my metal.
Most of the songs I like that I would (sometimes erroneously) consider 'metal' may have fast and furious drums and complex guitar work, but I like it balanced with sections that slow things down and give the ear a bit of a rest before exploding back into the fray. I guess I want to have my cake and eat it too.
Vocals can include screaming, screeching, or howling as long as (again) it's balanced with singing. I don't have any prerequisites for the lyrical content, especailly considering the genre generally has dark themes and I'm all about brooding and ominous music. If it has a catchy chorus, I'm sold.
How about you, the mog-masses? How do you like your metal?

rather catchy indeed. ive heard of them before but ive never sat down and listened to one of their songs. i really like that slow part about half way through.
Another good track by In Flames is "The Quite Place":
(Forgive me if the video is wrong... I don't get youtube @ work)
Daniel -> at last we merge, we meld, we crashed into each-other -> I knew we'd finally find something we both had...In Flames have been in my plethora of music for some time now, and always get at least 4-5 of their songs on my MP3 player a week -> nice twisted tune my friend ->
sometimes their guitars can sound a bit 'video-gamish' if you know what I mean, but they still got some serious rocking stuff...
And yes I second Sam, the acoustic spanish riff in the middle was nice before it dropped back into gear ->
Joe - I'm making it my New Year's resolution to add more Metal to my musical diet, so hopefully we'll have bands in common soon. I found In Flames when it was suggested to me by Last.fm. I like how their songs often have the perfect match of heavy to soft parts that I like.
Have you heard Gojira?
The name sound familiar, but I can't think of a song by them. I'll be sure to check them out!
I think you definitely should :) Let me know what you think of them!
nice, nice -> given time, our pie chart of matching music will grow but the beauty of our own likes and dislikes is that we shall never be the same, but respect the other -> who am I, Oprah or Doctor Phil, sorry to sound like that, you bloody know what I mean ->
Excellent point. I'm hearing you loud and clear.
I don't think I'm qualified to say anything about metal since the last time I really delved into the genre I was in high school. The song has a rather catchy melody indeed...
