WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

hey guys.

so it's my first post here on MOG. i know this will turn out drastically wrong, just bear with me here.so i come from england. near liverpool, actually. and i've found myself listening constantly to bands from the other side of the atlantic. my favourite band is no exception - in fact, my favourite band are basically half way around the world from here.if you hadn't already guessed, the band in question is death cab for cutie. i know people will probably disregard me for this, but the first i heard of the band was 'i will follow you into the dark' from plans. i know earlier fans will now criticise me, but, in my defense, death cab are fairly obscure in britain. and i'm not an oc fan either. so it was just by chance that a friend of a friend mentioned them one day in august. in september i bought plans. by february, i had all their studio albums, along with 'chords', and the forbidden love ep. so anyone who says i only listen to plans is, quite frankly, wrong.death cab are a brilliant, brilliant, brilliant (i could type this a few more times) band. i fell in love with plans, and this was cemented when i bought 'we have the facts and we're voting yes' a couple of months later. it gave me two sides to the band - the later, slower, less rocking ballads, and the earlier, more indie rock songs. and the lyrics are fantastic; ben has to be one of the most talented songwriters of the generation.i decided to venture further into early death cab with my next purchase, and bought something about airplanes. i love president of what?, champagne from a paper cup, and pictures in an exhibition; these are just examples. it is one of my favourite albums, and it's around the point i bought this that i became pretty obsessed with them. purchase of the photo album and transatlanticism followed.the photo album showcases amazing indie rock songs. it's got something for (nearly) everyone. if you're more into up-tempo stuff, chances are you'll like 'i was a kaleidoscope', 'why you'd want to live here', or 'a movie script ending', if you like slower, sadder songs then 'styrofoam plates' with its retelling of a father's death is probably for you. all in all, it's a great album.transatlanticism, was, interestingly, the last studio album i bought from the band (due to an order for the cd being cancelled). i was, and still am, impressed from start to finish. it's a beautiful album, and undoubtedly one of the best in my collection.then i bought the forbidden love ep. photobooth is one of my favourite songs, technicolor girls is cool, and i love the acoustic version of 405 perhaps even more than the album version.finally, i bought you can play these songs with chords. i like quite a lot of the early versions of something about airplanes songs, particularly champagne from a paper cup. some songs on the cd are pretty stupid though - for example, flustered/hey tomcat! just sounds like the result of a night on acid or something. it's not their best work, but it's still cool.death cab for cutie, in general, make awesome songs with lyrics that most would envy. they're a great band with diverse tracks to suit most tastes. i hope when it comes to the band's next record, more people will take notice of such a great band, and they will no longer go ignored here in the uk.-andy

  2. amber says I, for one, am with you on Death Cab. I can take it a step further and admit I've traveled around the USA (and into Canada) to see them live. If you like them on CD, wait until you see them live....blow your mind incredible!!!!! And anything Ben Gibbard writes is incredible...his shopping list probably would make me sigh if he put it to music and sang it to me. But you can find all kinds of great music here...and still stay true to your DCfC roots!!!! Cheers, Amber
