SOUNDS OF FUTURE PAST AND PRESENT PERFECT

in the roses

Here's what Rosanne Cash and I have in common: We were born in the same year, we live in New York City, and we lost our fathers in the not-too-distant past. Our backgrounds probably couldn't be more distant, but that last connection is crucial. It's why I love Black Cadillac, her meditation on/tribute to the lives and deaths of her dad, mom, and stepmother. These songs are spare and true and tender and wise: "I Was Watching You"All those years to prove how much I cared I didn't know it but you were always there Until September when you slipped away In the middle of my life on the longest day Now I hear you say I'll be watching you from above 'Cause long after life there is love Baby, I'll be watching you from above Long after life there is love "Black Cadillac"Now it's a lonely world Guess it always was Minus you and minus blood My blood"God Is in the Roses"God is in the rosesThe petals and the thornsStorms out on the oceansThe souls who will be bornAnd every drop of rain that falls Falls for those who mournGod is in the roses and the thorns***********************What really does me in, though, is the duet she does with her dad on Rules of Travel:"September When It Comes" So when the shadows link them,And burn away the clouds. They will fly me, like an angel,To a place where I can rest. When this begins, I'll let you know,September when it comes. When my dad passed away, there were one or two people who, having suffered such a loss, guided me through the dark forest with perhaps no more than a few words. (As Leo McGarry said to Josh Lyman, "Yeah, but I've been down here before and I know the way out.") That's not to say they made everything ok, because no one can; what they said, essentially, was "Don't underestimate how hard this is. Know that it's going to be really awful, and allow it to be. But you'll be all right." I've tried to do likewise for grieving friends, but now I'd be inclined to also hand over Rosanne's CD. Question: What song/LP/show saved you?

  2. Rebecca Turner says In answer to the question, I will post the song list for the CD this very Mogger made me in my time of loss. It's a playlist that she found helpful for herself (some of it's mentioned above), and it perfectly captured the mood of sadness plus wanting to celebrate the person gone. It got me through pretty well. Thanks, deedee.

When I Grow to Old To Dream - Nat "King" Cole

    Time Flies - Rosemary Clooney
The Folks Who Live on the Hill
Thanks for the Memories - Harry Nilsson

  3. deedee says Thanks, RT. That was my first playlist and the strange thing is, it wasn't meant to be a consolation mix. It started with "Time Flies" just because I liked it and I very gradually added what seemed to be related in mood/theme. And then I looked at the list and thought, My god, that is the saddest thing. So it's both morbid and comforting. Go figure. FYI to other moggers: That's Stéphane Grappelli's version of "The Folks Who Live on the Hill," a song I love. And the Tony Bennett track is with Bill Evans.
