Before we hooked up the gizmo that lets you play your iPod in the car ('92 model, cassette deck, no CD player), we used to listen to oldies on CBS-FM (101.1) till we lost the signal, then to a cassette or two, and then, when we got to the Hartford area, I'd slide the dial up to 102.9, WDRC ("dreck," haha), with a similar oldies format. (There's something comforting about that.) I liked CBS (this is, of course, before those JACK-FM creeps took over last year), mostly because it was staffed by veterans of New York radio that I'd known since childhood, guys like Harry Harrison, Bruce Morrow, Dan Daniel, and, not least, Dan Ingram. Here's the best radio moment, and here's why I miss radio as it was: A few years ago, returning home from one such trip, we're sailing down the West Side Highway, just toward dusk, the George Washington Bridge glowing in the distance, and Dan Ingram plays "Mack the Knife." One of the most exciting, exuberant records ever, right? With that easy, snapping build-up to that heady last blast. Record ends, Dan sounds about as elated as a man could be, and he says, no kidding, "I gotta play that again." And he did.
