a snowy-blowy christmas, a mistletoe-y christmas

I'm going to hop into the wayback machine with emscee and visit the '60s.

In late '68, Promises, Promises, a musical adaptation (by Bacharach-David) of the brilliant and beloved movie The Apartment, opened on Broadway. Promises is neither brilliant nor, as far as I know, beloved, though it did feature Jerry Orbach and a winsome ingenue named Jill O'Hara, and the lovely duet "I'll Never Fall in Love Again." And it did have a young Michael Bennett as choreographer; witness this uber-exuberant number, "Turkey Lurkey Time."

So many of our favorite holiday songs (Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas; Merry Christmas, Darling; etc.) are filled with wistfulness and melancholy and longing (not that there's anything wrong with that). Here's some cork-popping merriment as an antidote.

Maybe you know this, but among the many amazing things about the movie Camp is the music-camp teenagers' staging of this number. Having trouble embedding this, so here's the link:

I was this close to including that clip. It's one of the best parts of the movie.
