WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

happy birthday, mr. bennett

Tony Bennett is 81 today. I was lucky enought to see him in concert three times: Radio City, Carnegie Hall, and the Blue Note (for non-New Yorkers: a pocket-sized jazz club in the Village). You watch him, and you think, my god, is there anyone who loves performing as much as he does? He sublimely, exuberantly loves what he does, and he does it better than anyone, with energy and élan, and he's the very last of his kind. This song (music by Jerome Kern, lyrics by Dorothy Fields) is a family favorite:

  1. Jonh Ingham says A gorgeous tune. In a Vanity Fair profile a few years ago Bennett described his style as sneaking up on the song and wrapping his arms around it - basically, easing into its emotions. This video is an apt expression of that.

  2. deedee says That's lovely, Jonh. What's amazing to me is that he recorded "The Way You Look Tonight" almost 50 (!) years ago-- it's on his (sadly) out-of-print Long Ago and Far Away album-- and he's wrapping his arms around it with just as much ardor.

  3. Jonh Ingham says There was a docu on BBC a few years ago about Tony. They took him back to the old neighbourhood, where he hadn't been in something like 50-60 years. Lets just say he didn't come from the best part of town. Got out of the car and almost the first person to walk past goes 'Tony?' and it's a childhood friend. A great moment, because he starts reminiscing in a way he wouldn't have otherwise. It's a great show, if you can find it, with a lot of live performances.
