Artist: Album: Los Bandoleros Track: Los Bandoleros

Oh dear, I've been a little busy with life and stuff - haven't been around lately. It's not likely to get any better real soon, I'm afraid (or much to your relief, depending on how you feel).

So, in the past few months, I've become a pretty rabid Blue Jays fan. I'm as surprised as anyone, seeing as it's pretty much common knowledge that I'm not much for professional sports, generally speaking. I'm especially vocal about my extreme distaste for pro hockey. One of my best pals is a huge baseball fan and goes to games all the time - they're cheap, close and a pretty fun way to spend a summer evening. I'd been once or twice before and had a great time, so I started going with him more often, to the point where I actually found myself wishing I had a season pass. I attribute ~60% of my sustained interest in the 2007 Blue Jays to one man: muy caliente right fielder Alex Rios. I would choose to sit way out in right field instead of behind the plate just to be able to ogle him all game, he's so cute. Last game I went to, I did just that - can you blame me, look how close I was!

So pretty much every player in MLB has a walk-on song - the song that plays when it's that guy's turn at bat. It's like a little window into that player's world, sorta. I wonder what my walk-on music would be, were I a professional baseball player? I guess the point is for it to pump you up, pump the crowd up, and still somehow reflect a certain aspect of your personality. Or it can be totally gimmicky - like a play on your name or something. Maybe I'd choose Bowie's Diamond Dogs, only I'd change the words to Diamond Debs. Moggers, what would your walk-on music be?

Los Bandoleros by Don Omar (and featuring Tego Calderon) is my homeboy's walk-on music (or at least it used to be, I'll have to listen next time I'm at the Skydome to see if it has changed). I don't understand a word, but I love it all the same (or maybe I love it because I don't know the words). Anyway, I'm totally into it, if you know of other stuff like it, holla at me.

I would pick "Loser" by Beck just for the irony of it.

My baseball fan co-worker said he would pick "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash. (Twins fan)

Fun post.

I don't know how much it actually says about me, but I think Missy Elliot's "Work It" would be a great song to take the field with.

Either that or Queen's "Killer Queen" - that's more me, but it's not such a stadium anthem.

I was at a Magnetic Fields show a few years ago (when "I" was just out - geez, was it really in 2004? I'm getting old, fast) at Trinity-St. Paul's United Church on Bloor St. It's a charming and lovely place to see a show (I more recently saw Jose Gonzalez there) - charming, lovely and extremely hot. They didn't build churches with AC back in those days, so I guess you had to be prepared to sweat to death for Jesus. Anyway, it was in the sticky, moist heat of that church that I first heard Andrew Bird and it could not have been more enchanting. I was compelled, in a way that I had never been before, to immediately get his album, Weather Systems and I played the shit out that album. All hush and strings. Perfection. And then I totally forgot about him, without warning or reason. Granted, there's only one album that I missed out on - which I know nothing of - but I kinda feel like I owe it to myself not to miss out on this guy's stuff again. And there's a tour, and he's coming to Toronto, so I should see him when he comes around. It's not in the sweaty little church this time, which is a relief. I'm just getting to know the new album, Armchair Apocrypha, so I'm not sure what'll really resonate just yet. So here's this one. As a scientist, I like the clever/nerdy play on words (click here if you totally skipped biology class that day).

If you've found yourself here after taking Rawkiddo's advice, then welcome to you! And thanks so much for the warm reception so far - you guys are so sweet (is that normal around here?). I'm still learning the ropes, finding my voice, etc. but it's been fun so I guess I'll keep at it - see what happens.

Despite my apparent classic rock leanings, I like a little bit of most things - but I do have a soft spot for Toronto indie rock. And I'm ashamed that I don't go to more shows, seeing as I live within a 10-minute bike ride of most venues in the city. Mid-year resolution, perhaps? There's so much amazing music in this city, I could listen to nothing but Toronto bands and be pretty much satisfied. Stay tuned, 'cause I'm sure I'll talk about some of 'em sooner or later (in fact, I already did, sorta - see The Bicycles post a few days back).

As far as non-Toronto stuff goes, I'm anxiously awaiting Rilo Kiley's new album next month. God, I love that band. "Does He Love You?" off More Adventurous is one of those songs that can seriously brings me to tears. It's so ... tragic? Is that the right word? Whatever it is, it's so heart-wrenching, I love it. And I'm a sucker for strings.

I'm hoping that I can expand my repertoire based on what I read/hear here. I've been feeling a little stagnant lately, so I can use a little inspiration. Looks like I came to the right place. Awesome.

And here's a little sumpin' I find absolutely hilarious. Maybe you've seen it before (or some variation of it) but you can stand to see it again, I assure you:

OMG! That’s one deeply disturbing bit of video, and naturally I watch it right before I go to bed. I’m sure I’ll be having some weird dreams tonight…of a breakdancing Chucky most likely. KeeRyest!

OMG, I can't believe that video has been resurrected and resurfaced. It's seriously messing with my head but love it in that twisted kinda way...
