MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Alex Chilton's rise to fame as the 16 year old lead singer for the Boxtops, and subsequent battles with the twin demons of fame and self-destruction is an often told story. The musical detritus of these battles provide facinating and often frustrating listening.

Like Flies on Sherbert could not have been recorded, and certainly never released by, anyone but Alex. Self-indulgent lo-fi caveman psychedelia with a charm that's at once unmistakeable and undetectable, the song, and the album from whence it came flew in the face of POP music at the time. Some say it flies in the face of MUSIC anytime, but i find it to be amusing, bold and very dark.

On a slightly different note: Am I the only one who finds earbuds

to be an annoying distraction? Sometimes i spend more times fidgeting with the damn things than i do Listening!

Still not totally versed in the world of Chilton, so thanks for the tip. Earbuds are annoying, totally agreed there

Well, if those are the earbuds you are using, no wonder you think they suck, because those do. I can't believe Apple actually charges money for those. You can find much better ones for not too much money. I'm all about some Chilton, and Big Star, too.

Must admit that I have stayed pretty firmly within the pop side of Chilton's ouevre. Own Big Star (by the way, have you heard the "new" Big Star CD featuring Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow from the Posies?). I haven't really heard any of his solo stuff, just read a lot of reviews calling it frustrating and inconsistent. But I'm sure if anyone would have a tolerance for the more far-out stuff, it would be you! Enjoy.

I recently found out about him, via a cover that Placebo did on Holocaust. As for earbuds...I broke 3 last year...

Cody B, Alex can make some sublime pop music, some self-indulgent crap, and some totally WTF moments. Yeah, lesterjonze, i've seen them at various price levels, but one cannot really tell by lookin', you know? most places i've been too don't have a pair that anyone can try on, and if they did i certainly wouldn't. dermarhk, your comment mystifies me. I think my tastes are so mainstream NORMAN ROCKWELL could do the illustrations.

Anna! Hi, how are you? Placebo? Do they cover the Song, Holocaust?

I feel mainstream AND old..... Never used the buds, went right into Sennheiser pmx60 over the ear headphones. Cheap and great sounding, (with no earwax buildup).

I think anyone that can listen to Yoko yowling and not stick sharp pencils in their ears has a taste for the experimental.

Thanks for the Chilton tip. I'll have to check it out. Was just scratching my head over the earbud conundrum yesterday. I took a long walk while hooked up to my iPOD and noted that every time I had to futz with the earbuds I tripped [royally and embarrassingly] over some obstacle in my path that I hadn't even seen.

Radio Shack sells a little square zippered pouch that you can store your ipod headphones in, and it has a bunch of little round rubber caps that you can fit over the ipod earplugs so that they actually stay on your ears and you can actually hear the bass. The caps come in two sizes. The pouch is well-designed, and it costs around $15.

The buds thing bugs me as well. I did see that you can get them custom fit for the inside of your ear for about 100 bucks, I will stick to my Koss headphones for the time being.

The pouch I mentioned before Rawkiddo is made by Griffin. I recommend it. Included are two little round plastic caps that cover the ibuds and each have a narrow peg sticking out that one covers with a little rubber cover that comes in two sizes. With this set-up you can stick the ibud a little deeper into your ear so that it doesn't fall out, you hear the music better, and the bass better, and you can clean the rubber covers if you feel the need (I don't).

oh yeah I am very anti-ear bud. I don't care what kind I get, they never fit my ears.

Spent a little quality time, dining and hanging out with Chilton in New Orleans a few weeks ago during Carnival. You can read about it here, if you like: http://mog.com/Mike_the_Knife/blog_post/45660

He's a smart, unpretentious guy - a little idiosyncratic, but very nice. And you gotta love the music. ("In the Street" rules!)
