MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:
Album: NPR
(71)

Emily Haines, maybe you know her work with Broken Social Scene , or Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton. Or maybe you don't know her at all. You should though. This solo performance, from NPR, showcases her slightly idiosyncratic piano style and her dusky vocals. She's also a gifted harmony singer, as her work on The Stars cd "Set Yourself On Fire". So, I present my case.... Jury?

On the voice-to-breath ratio, a very important measure in my aesthetics, Haines is pushing it a bit. But let's not be churlish, it's a nice song sung well. Not so long ago my finicky ears rejected Young himself out of hand for tripping the nasal-and-annoying wire, but one learns to hear.

Not bad, but I do wish she could hit some of those notes, instead of just getting somewhere in the neighborhood. A bit painful at times. I do tend to enjoy covers of Neil's tunes more than I enjoy Neil these days.

runobudyii, it is a nice song, and dermahrk's comment notwithstanding, well sung. I think the tentative feel of the vocal, the hesitancy, the slight cracks, all add to the tenor of the lyric. But I do agree with you Mark on one point; I generally like Covers of Neil's songs better than Neils. (there are exceptions.)
