Some monsters smile, they're hip & cool and they understand. They understand bright beautiful sunny days in the south of spain, they understand their own saintly intent. Some monsters twist what's beautiful into scars that cannot heal. Their victims left alone on an island, unable to feel. Tryin' so hard to tell what's real.
This troubling little character study is one of the saddest songs I know. A little morality tale of broken hearts and crippled spirits that pulls you in and leaves you....saddened, shamed somehow. Someone should have been there. David Bromberg recorded this song for his first album, way back when. The frantic little harmonica bit at the end comes to us courtesy of Mr Dylan

Great Tune!

Nice. Best Dylan harmonica ever.

I love what you wrote up there. That's really the most dangerous kind of monster there is. The lifelike one.

I meant the lifelike and charming one.

Sad songs say so much, don't they? I love the slow drawl feel of this song. (Monsters are but creatures of our making, aren't they?)

That may be the most memorable story song I've ever heard. Musically it was fine. I wouldn't call either person in the story a monster. Her situation is of course far more monstrous than his, though.

The uncle, so hip, so cool, so monstrous in his brutal indifference, his misdirected "help".

Indeed.
