MELT-PROOF AND SCRATCH-RESISTANT

The Enigmatic Forehead

Posted over 2 years ago
In so much of the footage of old Band performances, Garth Hudson was the madman hiding behind his banks of keyboards, bobbing around, wild hair flailing about his Larry Fine forehead as he produced some of the eeriest, wildest, funkiest, spaciest, and all 'round fun sounds ever to grace the rock n roll world. The synthesizer wizards which would soon follow, Like Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, and others, could never come close to the tones and sounds GH would find in his Lowery organ. On the (in)famous Dylan tours, and the recordings that have survived, GH provides the most amazing colors and undertones to the overall sound.Robbie Robertson's ice-pick brittle/sharp riffs, and the thunder strike rhythem section of Levon Helm and Rick Danko were filled-out and underlined, paraphrased and parodied by Garth's brilliant keyboards. Now days Garth is the gentleman farmer recluse, playing the occasional session, the odd show here n there. His place in rock history secure, the man still finds music to be a healing balm and a life sustaining force. This track is from a performance in 2005 at the Wolf Performance Hall in London, Ontario, Canada.Enjoy this insane medley, which hints at so many tunes, but they're gone before I can identify them, most of the time.

  1. ivylander says How right you are, DM - Hudson has never gotten the props he deserves, probably because a) he's not a preening showoff and b) because the Band's was such an ensemble sound, it actually took some listening to hear how the component parts fit together, and Hudson's role in defining that sound was often so discreet. But this audio clip is so witty, and played with such a sure feel, that it's hard to deny that he is one of the great keyboardists....

  2. dermahrk says Beautiful stuff, DMDM. The Bear of R&R. He looks even more like a civil-war era mountain man these days. I assume Maud is his wife, with matching look. Thanks for this post.

  4. dermahrk says Another gem. Too bad the accordion is still trying to shake off its Lawrence Welk reputation - it still gets underused. I love that sound (when played correctly). You don't bother putting titles or artists on the MP3s? For shame!
