WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Funky Tuba

The Band's place in rock n roll history is secure. An extraordinary band of musicians and singers, they carved out a niche for themselves as a true ensemble in a time of shameless star-turn showboating. When the rock world was wrapping itself in the endless guitar slop of the blues revival, the Band decided on a different route. Theirs was a true band. They were country without a trace of the southern redneck brand of country rock which would flourish in a few years. They were funky, greatly infuenced by the sounds of Motown. And from Garth Hudson's keyboards sounds as wild and weird as any the psychodelic bands that would soon follow in the early seventies produced. The track I've posted here is from what is arguably one of the Greatest Live rocknroll albums ever released.I've posted it so you can here Howard Johnson's incredible tube work. The Man must have a leather bellows for lungs.

  2. dermahrk says A tuba in rock and roll. I love it. I had no idea you could play that fast a sequence of notes on a tuba. All I could think of was oom-pah-pah. and, about your Freudian slip....
