IS CLAPTON A BLUESMAN?

Posted over 2 years ago
This Blues chestnut served as a firey duel between two masters at the height of their powers. Eric Clapton is a devote STUDENT. He has Studied the Blues. But is Eric a BLUESMAN?I don't think so...I'll explain later, What do you think?

  1. Spike says Being a bluesman is one of his hats. Whites recorded blues before blacks, and have played a major part in keeping blues alive since the sixties. John Mayall, Stevie Ray Vaughan and fellow mogger Charlie Musselwhite are bluesmen because they have devoted their lives to playing blues. Clapton is a part-time bluesman, but maybe that means he isn't one.

  2. ivylander says I'm with Spike. Clapton is a musician who can play blues. It's hard for somebody who's a) English and b) the possessor of disgusting craploads of money to "know" or "live" the blues. But he's human, he respects the tradition, and his technical ability is beyond question. I don't much care for him myself, but my reservations about him have little to do with "authenticity." I just think he oversimiplifies and avoids risk for the sake of a broad audience (though from what little I've heard of that J.J. Cale collaboration, Clapton may not be beyond redemption).

  3. Cody B says Before I clicked to comments my first sentance is what Ivy said. I don't have a problem with EC and I really love Derek and the Dominoes and 461 Ocean. However,I never understood The God moniker. Jimi Hendrix was a God. It is not even EC's fault, but he could never live up to the hype folks put on him. The Unplugged thing was tasteful and all, but when I think of acoustic Blues, that I like, it ain't tasteful, it is raw. Softer fingerpicking stuff like Etta Baker or Taj, I adore, but EC can't hang there, Can he? I'm not a musician, so I can't say for sure, it is just a feeling I get. Or perhaps the hype of Unplugged is what messed me up. I guess if I'm not a huge fan,It's nobodys fault but mine.

  4. dermahrk says You is RACIST! You and Imus. ;) Seriously, it's a strange category which, in my opinion, only fits blues players (all black) from the 1960s and prior. Is Robert Cray a bluesman? Not in my definition. Clapton may not be an original, but he and the other Brit blues lovers have probably done more for the bluesmen (especially their pocketbooks) than anyone else.
