  1. ivylander says If Dylan were a self-proclaimed prophet, this would maybe an ounce of sense. But has always maintained exactly the opposite. Therefore, it's up to us to decide, as it should be. As it is, this business just sounds like a case of ill-conceived paranoia. Closed ears are never a good idea, and I'm not just talkin' about music.....

  2. Joxley says So the Pope objects to a singer who preaches love and peace just because he isn't a strict Catholic? Seems a bit foolish to me, and that the Pope should accept that there is more than one valid way of looking at the world..it's the destination that matters not how we get there.

  4. dermahrk says Seems to me that a pope should not be calling attention to false prophets. That's the pot calling the kettle black.

  5. CGonzalez says why was the pope even talking about Bob Dylan? does he field questions like a press secretary, or did Mr. Dylan start this conversation?

    I'm confused.

or maybe Bob Dylan was the topic of the day on the pope's daily "Topic Calandar"?

    Anyways, Dylan Rules!!

  6. TynansAnger says Well, after all, good ol' Bobby Zimmerman, like me, killed Jesus and is responsible for all the wars in the world, which is not very prophet-like

  7. Wozniak says If you talk to Mel Gibson, we all killed Jesus. Even the Catholics. Shit like this makes me ashamed to be Catholic. Way to go, Bennie.

  8. Groon says Since a prophet, by definition, is someone who talks to God, and as far as I know Dylan has never claimed to . . . well, seems like a stupid, ignorant statement from the get go. and, not to start a war here, but to an earlier commenter--if the Pope believed in the "destination matters, not how we get there" statement, he would be a crappy Pope, considering his whole job is based on the idea that HOW we get there is just as important and dictates where the destination is, in the first place.

  9. Groon says And at the risk of getting all the "He is a crappy Pope" statements, I'm just saying that that relatvistic philosophy isn't in the job description in the first place. It'd be like a Muslim priest (an Imam, I think?) that Muhammed, while being a nice guy, wasn't really all that important in the grand scheme of things. Oh no, that might set even MORE people off. Sorry!!

  10. deadmandeadman says Wow. Groon you theologian! Yes the Pope wants to make sure we're all on the staight n narrow as HE defines it. CGonzalez, all this has come about because of the Pope's new book. The PR people couldn't hang their hats on an essay about faith an reason, no one would pay attention! Whatever........I'm sure His Bobness will forgive the Pope!

  13. redmiller1 says As a practicing Roman Catholic, and Bob Dylan fan, I feel I need to chime in on this one. Seems to me Deadman, that your comments aren't quite accurate, and likely taken from a press report that may have some anti-Catholic bias. I have not read Pope Benedict 16's new book John Paul II, My Beloved Predecessor". It just came out on Thursday. I probably will borrow it from the library now, so thanks for the tip. I did find a few quotes in a Reuters story that appears on Yahoo News. Benedict 16 is quoted as saying about a 1997 concert where Dylan appeared along with Pope John Paul II and other popular artists: "There was reason to be skeptical, - I was, and in a certain sense I still am, - to doubt if it was really right to let these types of prophets intervene," The article goes on to say... "At the 1997 concert, John Paul referred to what is perhaps Dylan's most famous song, "Blowing in the Wind," which became an anthem for young people seeking meaning in life in the 1960s. John Paul told the crowd of some 300,000 young Italian Catholics that the answer was indeed "in the wind" -- but not in the wind that blew things away, rather "in the wind of the spirit" that would lead them to Christ." So Benedict 16 says he was skeptical? What's the big deal? Here's the link to the Reuters article on Yahoo news. That said, I will now go post a related answer in my Mog regarding this whole discussion. So thanks also for the inspiration...

  16. Spike says It sounds as if the conflict is merely about meteorology. Dylan established his credibility in that area when he prophesized that "it's a hard rain's a gonna fall." Later he claimed, "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows." John Paul seemed to feel that you do need a Pope to let you know that the wind should blow not away but towards Christ. I surmise that the Pope is upset because Dylan has catholic tastes and the Pope likes only Mantovani.

  17. Mike the Knife says Hmm. This brings up a more important question: What's the Pope's take on Marilyn Manson?
