Alex Chilton's rise to fame as the 16 year old lead singer for the Boxtops, and subsequent battles with the twin demons of fame and self-destruction is an often told story. The musical detritus of these battles provide facinating and often frustrating listening.
Like Flies on Sherbert could not have been recorded, and certainly never released by, anyone but Alex. Self-indulgent lo-fi caveman psychedelia with a charm that's at once unmistakeable and undetectable, the song, and the album from whence it came flew in the face of POP music at the time. Some say it flies in the face of MUSIC anytime, but i find it to be amusing, bold and very dark.On a slightly different note: Am I the only one who finds earbuds
to be an annoying distraction? Sometimes i spend more times fidgeting with the damn things than i do Listening!
