  1. ivylander says Indeed, this applies to both sides, and has for some time. A friend of mine whose father knows/knew well a top Republican strategist told me this story: George Bush The Elder (who is, by all accounts, a thoroughly decent guy in civilian life) calls the strategist just after the Republican convention in '92 and says, "Listen, I'm worried. We didn't get as big a bounce from the convention as we'd hoped, and I'm a little worried that this Clinton guy could actually win. What do you think I should do?" The strategist answered, "My advice is to sit down, search your soul, and choose three things that mean the most to you. Could be the education of our children, the environment, putting an end to poverty, whatever you see as the biggest, most important issues facing this country. Then, you make those three things the cornerstone of your campaign. Be passionate about them. If someone tries to sidetrack you into talking about another issue, just tell them, 'That's important, but not as important as these issues.' Then you bring them back to the three things you care about. If you can convince people that you truly care about these three issues and will do everything you can to resolve them, then people will trust you and you will win." At this point, Bush pauses and says, "That sounds like a very good strategy. What three things should I believe in?" Now, this may be an apocryphal story. But two things make me tend to believe it. The first is its source; the woman who told me the story is a staunch Republican. The second is that I've never heard it from anywhere else in 12 years, which would tend to discredit the theory that it's an urban myth. I personally don't think it matters which side of the political aisle the story comes from. It illustrates perfectly my stance toward professional politics. The only thing scarier, in fact, is amateur politics.

  2. deadmandeadman says True words, ivylander. So true. The story about Bush the Elder is interesting. I thought the man was fairly constant in his stances on a wide range of issues. Bland, generalized, and unassuming. But can you tell me Hillary's position on ANY issue, and be assured that it won't be the polar opposite next week?

  4. Spike says They say democracy is a terrible idea, but better than any alternative. Democracy gives me the power, the power to be complacent. Not.
