WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Chicago Shorty

Posted over 2 years ago
Because the Chicago Bears will be in this year's Super Bowl, I feel its a good time to remind folks about Steve Goodman. Although he was first and foremost a CUBS fan, he was an avid sports fan, and absolutely in love with the City of Chicago. I suppose his best known song would be "THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS", although more people know ARLO'S version. Steve's songs have been covered by a who's who of Country, Folk, and Rock. His lyrics constantly and consistantly amaze and amuse. A true folk poet. No highbrow, studied, mannered, Paul Simonisms from Shorty, He prefered the styles and vocabulary of the everyman. No surreal flights of nightmare Dylanisms, just a very loving insight into the human heart n soul. He was a spiritual brother to Jim Croce in that respect, they both had a feel for the language, and the people who's lives are real close to the bone. They both had an instinctive understanding of the rhythms an flow of conversation, and their lyrics always had the easy roll-off-the-tongue feel, coupled with a razor wit and a gentle heart. We need more like Steve (and Jim). So many songwriters reach for THE BIG STATEMENT. Steve Goodman was more than happy to point out the joys and sorrows and fears and hopes found in the tiny folds of everyday life.If you're not familiar with Shorty's music, you owe it to yourself. Check him out.

  2. Clay Eals says deadmandeadman: Good to see your post about Steve Goodman. He often doesn't get his due. Thought you might be interested in an eight-year project of mine that is coming to fruition -- a biography of Goodman that will be published this spring. Please e-mail me at ceals@comcast.net if you would like me to e-mail you a background sheet on the book. One more comment: Your words about Goodman are so eloquently stated and on the mark that I would like to find a way to get them into my book. I'm in the last week of layout, however, so it would be good to connect with you in the next few days. I would be happy to reference your MOG name but also would like to use your real name and city of residence -- and to have a brief phone conversation as well.
