SILENT NIGHT, ALL DAY LONG

Posted about 3 years ago

John Prine is one of America's great songwriters. Not nearly as well known as he should be, his songs are honest snapshots of everyday people caught up in the high (& low) drama of livin'. His songs have been covered by a who's who of "stars", but to hear John Prine sing them is to hear the raw truths, great & small. His are the songs of the human spirit, songs that celebrate life with a little ell. Songs of spirits ground to dust by the simple, universal tiny tragedies of the day to day. Songs of souls hardened and polished to a bright sheen by the blast furnace culture that consumes so many around them. Like so many of the characters that populate his songs, John has a wry sardonic humor that keeps his songs from being maudlin or cliched, and a gentle, loving delivery that's as easy going as it is accessible.

One of the most valuable lessons I have learned from John Prine is to beware of underestimating the intellect of your mechanic or exterminator, because he may see the world a lot clearer than you ever will.  I have always been impressed by the subtelty of Prine's deep messages.  So many great songs, like you said, covered by more mainstream artists - here I will give the ol' boy credit on a few gems - "I Just Wanna Dance With You", "Angel From Montgomery", "Let's Talk Dirty in Haiwaiian", among others.  I cannot think of an artist that I can more easily relate to.  I have had the pleasure of meeting John with my Dad 3 different times after shows.  I have a picture of him, my Dad, and myself backstage at the show he did at Proviso East High School (his old school) in suburban Chicago. My Dad and I took the picture to a show in Louisville later and got them signed by him when we lucked out again and got to come backstage after the show. He is as soft spoken and friendly, humble a person you could ever stumble upon.  I have seen him live more than a dozen times in at least half a dozen states, but all with my Dad, and all a great time.  You will hear many of the same classics repeated at every Prine show, but there is always a unique personality to each rendition and a new joker in the audience that feels a need to add a little backup vocal - "I need more cowbell I tell ya" - unrelated but funny nonetheless (one of the best SNL skits ever)....Anyway I am here in Ohio and it is all of 14 degrees and it "...has been so long since I fet the warm sunshine" - from my favorite Prine tune, well maybe a tie with "Speed of the Sound of Lonliness".  By the way if anyone out there is interested in checking out one of the best folk artists still performing today - John Prine - German Aftrenoons is a good starting point. I will upload some songs when I figure out how, would like to trade or download also but I am unclear of what I need to do to accomplish this.  I, like JP, am a simple sort that does not fair at the hands of technology.  Help Anyone??
