WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

COLD TURKEY Accoustic

Posted 11 months ago

Cold Turkey stands out in The RocknRoll canon as a hair-raising testament to the agony of heroin addiction. In my mind this song, more than any other, finally shatters the illusion of the Mop Tops. For three plus minutes John Lennon is in your face and under your skin with a sharp, jagged & nervous cry of pain, need & determination. His sweat is palpable, you can almost smell the junkie stench, almost feel the pulsing need in the incessant bass, the jittery pounding drums.

It all seems so quaint now, but this song shocked many many fans of the Fab Four, (dermahrk?), & their disapproval was loud & vociferous. John spent many years trying to shatter the illusions, to de-diefy himself...

But he was chained to the Beatles like a convict, dragging it along in spite of everything & anything he did. In the end maybe we did crucify him. Maybe from the moment he hung himself on the crosshair of the media sniperscope he was bound to be martyred, sacrificed on the altar of entertainment...as the audience chant in unison ,,,,,"NEXT"?

But yeah, Cold Turkey, here done in sensitive singer-songwriter mode & what do you know....there's a sensitive soul, hurting & in need.

Can't say it shocked me - just disappointed me. Horrible, ugly music from the former rock master. Honest emotion? Sure...but that doesn't mean I want to listen to it.
