The Cowboy Junkies cover one of Dylan's lesser known gems. "License To Kill" is a beautiful tragedy, a poignant smoldering meditation on a world of technological nightmares & young souls fried in the Fat Of The Land. A timeless lament set in an anonymous but vaguely sparse landscape of small dreams & simple lives, the narrator struggles to see the world through the faceless woman's eyes but ultimately realizes he cannot, her role as mother supersedes all....but the narrator does apparently understand the metaphorical connect to Mother Earth.
The Cowboy Junkies inexplicably choose to open this track with a burst of laughter. Margo Timmins has a vocal style just this side of soporific, with the proper song she shines with a lowgrade luster that's difficult to deny.
So?

I enjoy "lowgrade luster"
Agreed, that's perfect description.
I like the Junkies low-grade groove, but your knowledgable and evocative write up made it 150% more enjoyable.
Its been so long since I've listened to the Cowboy Junkies.. Thanks for the reminder!
Not familiar with the original Dylan version, but I certainly enjoyed this.
