The great Sound of Kool & The Gang. Its odd how our tastes develop & evolve over the years, I hated this track during it's heyday. But I've come to really appreciate Kool & The Gang's first phase. Owing much to brother James Brown's funk & George Clinton's sense of goofy fun, Kool & The Gang nevertheless carved out their own niche on the dance floor in the early seventies.

"Carved out" is an understatement!
I first heard this song as part of the Pulp Fiction o.s.t. (shame on me? Perhaps ;P), and it was love at first listen :)
Like the Ohio Players or E,W&F, Kool and the Gang's earlier records, like this one are full of fun and funk. I think the disco outfreakage forced these bands to scale back their funk in favor of a tighter, more discoey, more poppy sound..In the beginning, a lot of them were really drawing on jazz sounds and experimentation, while building nice fan bases, but then they all reached for the pot o' gold and we got Love Rollercoaster, Boogie Wonderland, and Celebration...which are fun sounds and all, but no where near the freaky funk roots all these cats started with. Nice one DMDM.
You're right DMDM, I tolerated these sounds back then for the ladies' sake, but nowadays they sound mighty fine!
Cody, used to drive by the home of some/most of the Ohio Players on every trip to the Dayton record shops. Closer to the sound than I expected??
As a longtime denizen of the urban jungle, this always resonated with me. And don't get me started on "Hollywood Swinging." Kool? Cool.
like you, Jeff, i had little to no appreciation for this song. i think it was too popular and overplayed was why. now i do.
inrumford says: "Carved out" is an understatement! - ahahahah.
The only constant is change
