WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Artist:

Which is more pathetic, A musical star who doesn't know when t'quit? (GNR ,THE WHO, The Beach Boys, et al.?) Or an athelete who doesn't know when t'quit (Brett Favre, Drew Bledsoe, etc etc? Any thoughts?

I weep for Brett Farve, no doubt. He shoulda thrown in the towel 2 years ago.

But some musicians can still pull it off with dignity - look at all the old bluesmen and even some rock bands, as long as they don't try to act like 21-year-olds. But if they can still sing and play well, why not?

I'd see The Who over Crap Your Pants Say Yuck any day.

Well, it's not like they have job training for anything else. It's like that bit at the end of Spinal Tap where they ask what else they'd do if they weren't musicians. Musicians at least can still make some form of music (although who winds up with the rights to a band name can make it misleading as hell). Whereas athletes stick around too long and wind up hobbled or multiple-concussioned and doing commercials, like I'd buy a particular truck from a brain damaged ex-jock.

well the who's album is ok if you do not compare it to their body of work and farve (if he had a line and receivers prolly got a year or two left although i guess if you love the game THAT much i really used to think rocknroll was NOT for OLD people till i became an old people!!!!!

It is a trip to imagine like the guys from Slayer or Metallica or System of a Down at age like 60...playing blues or blues-based rock or psychedelic rock or folk rock at that age is one thing...but speed metal?

When California falls into the Pacific and Vegas IS the west coast they can be speed metal lounge acts. At least some bands wait til they're old to sound like it. I'm more concerned with the bands that sucked from the start. I mean, I don't care if the Stones aren't any good anymore, they were great for years and people WANT to see them. So if the Who or whoever can still get paid for it, more power to em. "Hope I die before I get old?" Gotta amend that sentiment if you get old and yr not suicidal.

i can see SONIC YOUTH (as an example) goin on n on. Their sound an' audience is still being explored. DUSTDEVILs so correct.....age is no factor......but some don't wanna grow old......AXEL?....an' they end up lookin' like a caricature of themselves. STONES anyone? The world's most expensive tribute band. Meanwhile in clubs n bars all over the world the next big thing is percolating/gestating/mutating/regugitating/celebrating music.

wow, GREAT post.

I'm sick of the Stones. I'm sick of Paul McCartney. I'm sick of the Who. I'm really really sick of Elton John.

I'm not against any of the above people. I just wish they would pack it up.... and find a new hobby perhaps.

i'm all for old musicians if theyre as good as they were when they started off, but there are some bands that should learn when to quit. to name a few: the rolling stones, the who, and madonna. there are some though, that are still going strong and should stick around ex: bob dylan. i'd say that when half of your band is dead, it's time to quit.
