A song most often associated with Son House, John The Revalator is in fact as old as the mississippi mud. Accounts of "field hands" (slaves) singing versions of this predate the civil war by 5o yrs. Blind Willie Johnson, unlike so many of the early blues great never left the sanctified music of the church. With his gruff world weary voice his gospel music was gritty, earthy & real.

Loved that, it is absolutely real and gritty. I love how certain styles of music can connect you back to the past so readily. Always been fascinated with exploring how musical history can teach us American history as well. Wish there was a book out there like that.
that prickles the back of the neck!
for some reason this button is grey at the moment but will check it later. I am really starting to appreciate Blues Music lately and the history it brings with it. Cheers Deadman!
As deep as the sea, as blue as the sky. What a voice!
Man. I woke up this A.M. with this very song ion my head. I searched my music for a version and the first I found was John Mellencamp's. It satisfied the itch temporarily but not like this version. The original, you say? Anyhow, thanks for giving me just what I was craving!
I'm happy you liked it.
